Description ⑨⑨⑨⑨BAKA FOREVER!!!⑨⑨⑨⑨⑨

Great Cirno day for everyone!

What else to upload than our favorite baka on such a fine day like this. And not just an ordinary baka at that, but animated too!

So yeah, as you some already saw my hypnotic boob animation test, I got into animating a little. So I took the challenge and animated Cirno. Total of 5 frames (0,09 second each btw!) and ~12 hours spent to create this one. I really wanted to try whether my understanding is sufficient for animating some actual movement, so I chose a running action. To spice up things, I wanted to throw in all manner of random things, like panties.

The legs were the hardest of all. I started with them because I thought that once I get them in smooth loop, the rest would come less painfully. And that truly was the case. I kept adding parts when I finally had rough version of done, then I refined everything and added colors and shadows.

I'm truly happy with how this came out. I guess 5 frames might be too few for smooth animating for the legs and skirt, but the rest looks pretty awesome, considering that this is basically my first "heavy" animation. This was extremely practical exercise for me to get familiar about animating and the process.

at this point in time it's technically both, although it started as a video game

Technically an anime? I thought it was technically more of an bullet hell that evolved to include fighting games, manga, music albums, and a couple of short writings. But the only touhou anime I'm aware of are fanime.

This is too cute!! I didn't even know who Cirno was till I saw this. Your animation is really coming along. It's not a smooth animation but there's enough information between the 5 frames illustrating that she is running. It's still a decent loop, your 12 hours or hard work shows that. I'm really impressed by not just the movement in Cirno's legs and dress, but things like the panties flapping in the wind, the twist in her torso, the ribbon around her neck. Those things move differently in their own way too and its things people often overlook. I know a lot of people are using that Emofuri program nowadays to try and animate with, but this is honestly the way to go. Especially if you want to understand the process behind it. :3

Yes, Cirno is like the cutest thing ever! xD This animation test was geared towards all manner of random things and see how their differing motion speed can be captured with only set amount of frames. As it clearly shows with the legs, the faster or longer distance the object needs to move with only few frames available, the less convincing the illusion of motion becomes. Such things would require more smearing to compensate the gaps. Things like the ribbon works very well with only 5 frames. And I agree: all the elements are separate and behave on their own, which makes the illusion more believable.

Although there are obviously many programs that help to animate things with less effort, I find this kind of animating most useful for understanding the movement. This will definitely help with still image drawing as well.

While I did try my hand at animating awhile back I was always intimidated to do so with programs like Marcomedia Flash. In fact, I did them back when Photoshop could switch over to ImageReady. But I did draw out my frames just like you did and it was helpful in understanding how it worked and what the end product would look like. It really is beneficial to work smarter not harder, so figuring out what works best without giving yourself more work (and killing yourself in the process) is the best way to go. As long as you get something out of the learning experience, it's time well spent~ I really am inspired by your practices to eventually give animation another go, but before that I want to get better still image drawing.

Great attempt! I have several pointers for this, but its as you said: its your first so you'll learn as you practice.
Not to advertise or anything, but check out my animations for some study?

Thanks!

Wow, you got some really cool animations there! If you are familiar with animating, I don't mind if you say your pointers aloud! Although I'm fairly aware of the merits and misses in this, hearing the opinions of an animator would definitely help. I have a lot of confidence in my understanding and ability to come up with things on my own, but it's not guaranteed to work all times. In fact, I may even have too stiff views on few things, so critique is always appreciated

I think I could have done better if I really wanted, but perfection wasn't my ultimate goal here. Before making more animations, I just wanted to get a preview of the process in order to see how much work it involves and to test how I can animate with just my current understanding. I'm not such a guy who wants to spend hours on polishing one work. I work with quick and short pieces in order to build up my experience to build up my routines for the real thing. I have found that drawing things from scratch multiple times is much easier and useful than fixing one work

lol, Happy Cirno day xD

I agree with some previous comments about the head; doing a little more bobbing up and down would have been more natural looking, in my I-have-no-idea-about-animation opinion lol. I also think maybe the pacing of the running is a bit fast (unless you were trying to simulate a comical feeling to the animation, which then makes a lot of sense!) but I can't deny how fluid the rest of it looks, so it's pretty darn impressive all the same! Not to mention, you're new to animation, so the next ones (if there will be next ones!) will most likely be even cooler.

Awesome work and awesome tribute to THE baka xD

p.s. - the panties make a good flag for victory

Nsio In reply to ShinguAmito [2014-09-10 04:13:43 +0000 UTC]

I thought the same about the head when I started working, but I felt that there were just too few frames for doing it like that. I'm afraid it would have looked less smoother if I didn't add few more frames to the sequence. It was hard to decide the pacing, because changing it always made it look "better" than the previous settings, if you get what I mean. So I settled with 0,09 seconds per frame, which is also fitting for the theme xD Now I feel a bit slower pacing would have looked better.

This was a test for seeing how 5 frames get the job done when the elements are moving in differing speeds (like slow swaying of the head vs. fast legs). While the upper part looks just fine in terms of smoottness, the legs would have required more frames. Currently the running sequence is missing parts where the character is in midair and the legs slow down for a bit, which is why legs don't quite work. This just wasn't possible with 5 frames (or I should have done it differently), but now I know that at least. More frames would have made it that much laborious to make and I probably wouldn't have managed to make it look any better with my current skills of animating

I think there are just several ways of running. To me it looks like she's sprinting rather than jogging (in which case the head tends to indeed move up and down quite a bit as gravity actually has time to do its job), I mean look at these sprinters . And don't forget about how Naruto runs! So in my opinion the run cycle works xD They get away with even fewer frames in anime and everyone still watches so ..

I did one brave thing today! Worth it... maybe?
(My Internet policy: poop it & run away!)
And yeah, when running, the head bounces pretty heavily. Now it looks like she is somehow mid-flying... Somehow stupidly victorious way.

When I started experimenting with animations for my Touhou game I quickly figured out it looks way better if your head moves with the body. Still epic sense of motion. Baka.
