Description Enaliornis barretti, highly hypothetical... based on Hesperornis.

According to , it looks too much like Hesperornis not to be Hesperornis

Very cool! Love the bubble effects, is that hand drawn...?

I would say it may be based a little *too* much on Hesperornis though. Enaliornis is very basal, more basal than things like Pasquaiornis and Brodavis which may still have been volant, or at least retained pretty large wings compared to derived hesperornithids. It was also very, very small so I'd expect it to look a bit fluffier and functionally shorter necked.

One thing that bothers me is that in the technical hesperornithine literature, every species is illustrated by slapping the few known bones onto an unaltered H. regalis skeletal. I get that this is the most conservative option, but it's highly unlikely the exact same body plan would be retained across such a huge spectrum of anatomy and size.

Good points! I think I should rechristened this image as Hesperornis and then redo Enaliornis along your lines It would still be very hypothetical though... Thanks, Matt!

What a great picture. I think this illustrates the hesperornithines quite well. This animal seems to be diving into the water fairly rapidly. Is that because it's trying to get away from a predator, or because it's spotted a meal, or something else? You don't have to answer this, it's just that this picture is awesome, and I wanted to know more about it!

Thank you! As to why it is diving, I let this to the imagination of the viewer...
