Description The most terrible mistake we do is to assume that we are the only mammals with superior emotional quotient.

I was at the athens zoo today. There was a young female tiger roaring with such sadness and pain that brought tears to my eyes. Her sister and only companion had died, I later found out...

It is blasphemy to think we are the only ones that feel!
Animals are not all instincts...

I don't like zoos for that reason.
There was an Amur Leopard at some english zoo, pacing in the same small section of her pen for hours, and it upset me so much.

so sad !
I've been to a zoo once (and a few times as a kid) but decided to never go back. Just seeing the animals in cage makes me angry and sad at the same time.
anyway, this is still a very poignant picture

at least he seemed to enjoy himself most of the time in his cage...
He just wanted to come out and play with us

i totally agree with you. i get really sad when i go to a zoo, any zoo, and i guess that's why i haven't gone to one in quite a time...

and this is a wonderful shot.

thank you...
I wanted to focus on just the baby monkey and the fence... nothing else mattered...
I love zoos but get sad in them...
thank you

everytime I go to our local zoo, I leave after a while with a feeling of disgust and sadness.
I too have heard the lions and tigers roar out in desperation, and I've seen the little monkey hands grasp the bars of their cage... desperately wanting to be released.
I understand and respect the idea of having zoos for the sake of preserving endangered species.
I do not understand why non-endangered species are kept in zoos for the sake of show and tell
in this day and age (with the internet, tv and the ease of travelling all over the world) zoos like that are nothing but prisons for animals...
you've captured how I feel about this perfectly with this image; thank you

I grew up next door to a little small town zoo.
you could feed the deer and walk around the ducks there.
I had never seen the sadness till i went to the big zoos and faced the really wild animals that were captured (had freedom and lost it) or know not how to live confided.
Monkeys have fun anywhere they are but this little one wanted to come play with the big colorful people and couldnt... perhaps for it's best but still....

there is a place in Stockholm, Sweden called Skansen. it is the worlds oldest open-air museum, and it is also a zoological park (mainly focusing on the scandinavian fauna of wild animals) and I tend to compare every zoo I ever visit to that one... which at least feels like it is there for a better purpose than any other zoo I've ever been to.
the one here in Sacramento, Ca is just awful and sad

you have to visit the one in Bali.
It is amazing... Everything is free except for the really wild ones...
You can see the animals are happier there...
and the temple of the monkeys is unbelievable. the monkeys stay there! they live there cause they choose to!
