After the death of Mufasa and his quick ascension to the throne, Scar immediately looked for ways to secure his claim and extend his bloodline. After a weak, failure of a son was born from Zira, Scar had to think smarter. A strong male can only come from strong females. He announced that he would be willing to take one other lioness. One lioness must come forward, he stated, or the rest of the pride will starve, more than they already did.Knowing her pride sisters distaste towards Scar but fearing for her own cubs safety, Sarafina volunteered. Despite Sarabi’s protests, Sarafina knew she was the best choice - although she was still Queen, Sarabi would never mate with Scar, she’s faithful to Mufasa.
Scar was delighted - Sarafina was both strong and beautiful - their offspring would be spectacular, he thought. And after a few months, Sarafina indeed became pregnant.
