Description So the scan is bad. Not my fault. I blame HP ... which isn't nice, I know.

I broke out the colored pencils and put a body on the head. Makes me ache for my old traditional stuff. Felt good to dust it off. And Steven, or Etienne as he's called here, is worth every last moment.

He's big. He's French. He's a MAN. And? He's only wearing chain mail gloves! (I thought you'd like that part.)

The real scoop on Steven (Etienne) is that he was originally born in 1400's France (or thereabout). He rode with Joan of Arc and his soul was destroyed when she died on the stake. He blamed himself for not saving her.

And so he is born over and over again trying to save the "Joan" of the era. We find him in the far future as a Ranger, following a fellow Ranger named Kali. He is much the same as he's always been.

But this? This is Etienne. The first.

(Yes, I am obsessed with Joan of Arc. And I am totally proud of it!)

I really need to do more traditional stuff ...

The face is priceless good! Love the expression you gave him. We all know how tricky HP can be sadly but it came out fine

I've looked at this piece several times and it just continues to grow on me. Plus, most recently, the liiiiiiiiines. And the colored pencil vs. digital media.

There is an interesting fluid component of art based on style and time, both in the one who creates the art and the one who perceives. When I first hit your gallery, I was looking at your images and topics. Very recently (May 2010) I have been glomming over your linework and your use of light as it pertains to coloring.

Here, I was marveling at what you did with the lighting and palette to create these very warm (very touchable, ahem) skin tones with the colored pencils. This coloring reminds me of your digital coloring on the picture with Reg's plootchy chair and on Turian Jr. It makes me want to have a conversation with you about traditional coloring vs. digital painting vs. digitally coloring line art for a comic. Styles, times and use of different media.

Anyway, your use of lighting is very recognizable through different styles (in the sense of comic vs. portrait vs. painting) and media, and you use it well to create mood. From touchable (here) to the warm but slightly gloomy sunset in Reg's chair picture, to the hard flourescent lighting in Accolon's cavalry motorcycle image, etc. etc.

HMM. Thank you for the many layers of things to think about. And the, ahem, appealing study material.

This one is SO old! It was one of those things that was beyond it's time. I am not sure I caught up with it yet.

Honestly, I can't do traditional anymore. I saw a pencil the other day. I poked it with my WACOM stylus and got scared when it rolled.

One of the big things I think about with line work is where the weight is on any given figure/object. Lines heavier where the weight is resting ... that bit. It can get tricky on figures. I'm just lucky to have Josh's shoulder to peer over and the opportunity to say "Man? This looks weird! Tell me how to fix it!!!" The answer is usually very simple ... the jerk.

This is fantastic. Your traditional media is straight up amazing. Hm, Joan of arc eh? now THAT is interesting <3 I love historical fiction (in most of the forms it takes). He has def struck a chord.

The song you linked to is also amazing

I am hoping that my digital stuff catches up. Someday.

Good ol' Steven is quickly becoming a favorite. I can tell he's going to have to come back for more gallery space.

Thanks for the love and the fave!

Holy wonderful anatomy, batman! I love how soft and curvy his muscles are, and that facial expression is just to die for. Seriously. I'm 5 minutes away from humping my computer screen.

On a serious note, I really like your story idea for him....hope to see more of Mr. Frenchy!

Thank you!

I am a history nut. If I ever go back to school, that's what I am going back for. You know: Learn the French, GO to France (Swoon at the foot of the huge statue of Vercingetorix!) ... blah blah.

But nerdiest of all, I was so excited to change my name when I got married because my initials became B.C.E. (Pretty sweet!)

Thanks! (And for the fave!)

I am actually kind of proud of this ... considering that the head and the body were done three years apart.

I want to do more with the story, and soon.

Okay. I lied. I had him to the shoulders. I was kinda bashful back in the day. Here: [link] And I did some touch up in photoshop. The nice thing about colored pencils is that they last a long time and if you stay with the same brand, they don't change. It was really a saving grace.

The only other one I have is what happens to him in the end of the Ranger story line: [link]

I love Steve. He's one of those characters who sits around in the little kitchen that is my mind and comments on things he ought not while he waits for me to work on him again.

CrystalCurtisArt In reply to NuBearEull [2010-03-02 15:04:30 +0000 UTC]

Ah! I would never have known! lol What brand of colored pencils do you use? I don't think I could pull something like this off and have it look 1/24th as good as yours came out. I lack consistency bigtime. x_x

Awwwww, I find it hard to bear looking at the end of a character. :C lol But I suppose there's always the in-between. So you'll be doing some more with this guy soon, you say! I wanna know if he ever finally saves his Joan! D:
