Description
Pencil sketch (2012) of my Emperor: the only one whom I would honour – not for birth or rank, but for intellect, virtue and merit. For what I consider pretz, valor e cortesia (and a great sense of humour, too). No-one should consider the labels 'Apostate' and 'Transgressor' as insults, for they have been attached to one of the best of men – the "little Greek" who was raised up on the shields of his men and crowned with the gold torque of the draconarius in his beloved city of Lutetia Parisorum.
I based it on the Musée de Cluny statue and coin portraits, with a nod to the early encaustic icons with their large, luminous eyes. I may do a colour version some time.
