Description
Evening at the Duplay house, Rue Saint Honoré. The lodger, as so often, is ailing and has retired to his room, but will probably continue reading and working by candlelight into the small hours.

For a while I've been wanting to draw Max with his hair (which was golden-brown-to-chestnut in colour) down. I based this on the definitive Deseine bust, with some ideas re: the hair from Lemoyne's portrait sketch of Falconet, and images from 18C-set films. I've made him a little bit thinner and more drawn than he is in the bust, because I suspect that only during one of his (frequent) illnesses would he accept being seen even by his friends with his hair out of queue and no cravat. (By the time of his death he was alarmingly gaunt, judging by a sketch on 9 Thermidor.)

It tears my heart to pieces to think of what the bullet (and the butchering surgeons) did.
