Description I've been insanely busy lately, but I wanted to participate in the MerMay challenge.

I decided to use a simple theme, so I drew mermaids inspired by the playing card suits! From left to right: Spades, Diamonds, Clubs and Hearts.

Maybe next year I could try participating the whole month...

Excellent and creative use of shapes. They've been wonderfully integrated with the organic aspects of the characters and "extras" they interact with (fishes and shells).

Thank you! It was fun to come up with ways to apply the shapes to the mermaids and their "accessories". :')

They do certainly live up to their namesakes, don't they? 8D And BTW those are nice ways to incorporate those symbols to their designs. Β  Gotta' love those spade-shaped fishies. x'D

Out of all those mermaids, though, I dig Diamond's design the most. Ms. Clubby is a close second. x)

And here's a little question: what compelled you to base these mermaids on playing cards? Juuust curious!Β

Oh, good question! Especially when I'm not that much into card games. :''D Hmm, let's say that the idea evolved from a simpler one. When mermaid drawings started popping up everywhere and I realized it's "that time of the year" again, I thought about drawing one heart-themed mermaid for the challenge. Something cute and simple, maybe play with the shapes a little bit. I started constructing the design in my mind and at one point I pondered if I could use other shapes too... Well, that's when the metaphorical light bulb got turned on.Β  Β What made the theme especially tempting was that I would "have to" draw just four characters and it would still be a full set. x''D

But hey, thank you! ^v^ Diamond was actually the first mermaid I started sketching, but I ended up finishing her the second. o3o (Because I really really wanted to draw those spade fishies first. x''3)

Got it - that's a humble beginning for such interesting concept. x) While personally I don't understand jack about those cards, I have an idea for ya for next year's Mermay: there are King, Queen, and Joker cards, no? So how about designing mermaids based on those?

And you're welcome. Think those spade fishies should become a mainstay - they're quite a sight to behold. 8D

Oh, that's a great idea! It would be a fun sequel to this year's MerMay set~ I could design King, Queen and Jack mermaids for each suit and the two Jokers - that way I could get many subjects to draw! *v* Β May I really use this idea (next year)? :''3
