I got the PS2 version as a gift WAAAAY back when, but kept putting it off because people were telling me it's so long. When it came out on 3DS, I bought it again, because I was about to go on a long business trip, so the portability was very appealing to me, and so finally, after all these years (and on a totally different platform!) I beat it!
Ahh, I'll have to check that out then!!

Yes, they added about 10 hours more of extra content on it.

Aww, thanks! Although I was trying to mimic the style of the game when drawing this horse, my own style always peeks through a bit. xD

I love this piece, captures both your style and the game's style.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Sky was my first actual DQ game, and I love it (Though the fact that your entire party are literally custom made heroes means they copped out on having them be important in the world around them, which hurts the overall story I think)

I loved IX, but that's because my first few Dragon Quests were 1-3, and so "custom" characters with no backstory was kind of what I'd come to expect. xD That's why when people are Final Fantasy fans, and they ask me anything about DQ, I usually tell them they probably wouldn't like it. IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, and now XI all have "set" parties, though, so the stories are a little "stronger". Although I'm usually a sucker for story and I HATE making my own dude (that's why I only draw fanart - I hate making "custom" or original things), Dragon Quest is just so fucking CORE of an RPG, and I love RPGs, so it's one of the only games that I not only forgive when I have to make my own dude - I actually enjoy it. Which is SO VERY unlike me!
Your character never talks, no matter what, so some people don't like that, but I'm also used to the strong and silent protags. xD I'm ancient by todays gaming age standards so. I have kind of ancient tastes, hehe.

So I think there are ways that it can be done REALLY well; For example...
Have your main character (you) be a custom character that you can identify with because they represent you, but have the rest of the characters in the world as a set party. Think something along the lines of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Heck, your custom character is woven so well into that story even. SUCH a good series, aaaah.
Honestly there's nothing wrong with liking older styles of games. That's why Indie Devs are doing so well these days, a lot of people crave the simpler gameplay styles! You are definitely not ancient either... Because if you are, then I am too, and I don't like that X3 hehe

Well Dragon Quest 9 had /only/ custom characters, being your main Angel and then 3 mercenaries. There were a couple people who popped in and out of the story but nothing drastic. That's literally the one thing I haaaated about 9. I don't mind making my own character, but I do mind making ALL the characters. Like, heck, let me just make my own game while I'm at it. XD
But I love making games so maybe that's not the strongest argument.
OH NOOO I'M A CRUSTY OLD FOX NOW, DANG IT.

I love this game so much. Dragon Quest VIII was one of my first PS2 games. I had played the demo that came from Shonen Jump when I was a kid!
The story is so moving to me, too. I find it hard to play any other Dragon Quests because I'm worried it wouldn't have the same effect on me. ;;
I'm glad you loved it <3

Yeah, it's REALLY long. Lots of "false ends", kinda like Ookami.
I'm actually really pissed that the ending boss wasn't... Bird themed... Like, really surprised.

It is a long game. I've been playing it almost nightly for about a month or so and Angelo has only just joined my party, but it's fine because I love long games. I don't like games (or any form of media tbh) that has me just starting to get used to the characters and setting and then... it just ends. :c
and yeah I've played it once or twice before but I ended up quitting for one reason or another just after they reached Port Prospect so this is the furthest I've ever gotten. I am really getting into it tho now. 8D
