Fufu is based on Chinese bat symbols. In China, the bat is a symbol of happiness and joy. The Chinese for bat (fú 蝠) sounds identical to the word for good fortune(fú 福) making bats a popular Chinese rebuses.

The Zubat line as well as the other bat pokemon have always been amongst my favorites
The more colorful design works much better than the old one

- Although these Pokemon is spooky looking, they don't mean any harm to travelers. When Trainers come to own a Fufu, their luck and happiness increase exponentially!
- Fufu float ominously in the night sky. Their eyes and mouth glow extremely brightly at night. They cause Trainers nightmares without meaning to.
