Description Jason moved through the darkness, nearly invisible. The castle gates were close now. Jason peered through the bushes he was hiding behind; there were only four visible guards, two outside armed with two short swords and two archers on top the battlements. Jason paused, thinking things over. He needed to take out those archers quietly. The foot soldiers were no threat to him. Jason closed his eyes and thought hard. Time passed and Jason still crouched behind the bushes, unmoving. His sudden movement spooked a small squirrel which was sitting in the tree above Jason. The squirrel squealed and ran away from Jason towards the gate. Jason pulled back and retreated deeper into the bushes. The guards were alert and raised their weapons. It took Jason nearly 30 seconds to realise he was holding his breath. He breathed slowly and as quietly as possible. The guards were shouting to each other and the two foot soldiers moved towards Jason. One of the archers disappeared and the other drew an arrow. Jason scowled. Someone had alerted the castle that he was coming, that’s why they were so sensitive. The two foot soldiers advanced. Jason retreated a little more. The guards continued to advance. They were in the trees and bushes with Jason now. Jason smiled slightly and drew his knife. It was a small, dull blade. It’s only discerning feature being a small symbol engraved into the dull iron blade. The symbol was that of a dragon, engulfed in flame. The previous owner of the knife had once told Jason that the symbol was the mark of an old clan called the Aram; a clan of warriors who based their lives around honour and dignity. It mattered little to Jason;  it was just another weapon he used to survive. The two guards came closer still, Jason moved quietly and circled them.
“This is foolish!” Snapped the taller guard.
“This is our job!” the short guard growled back.
“Our job is FOOLISH!”
“Enough!”
“It was just a stupid squirrel!” Sighed the tall guard, he was shivering from the chilly night air. He obviously wanted the warmth of their guard fire back.
“We were ORDERED to maintain vigilance tonight due to a hostile in the area!” The short man explained angrily, as though he’d had this conversation many times. Jason watched the men with interest. He was crouched barely ten metres to the men’s left and they hadn’t even noticed him.
“It was just a squirrel!”
“FINE! Head back then!” Growled the short one, he didn’t seem in the mood to argue further with his persistent friend.
“Good.” The tall guard stood straight and smiled. The two guards turned around and began to move around. Jason moved from behind the bushes silently and stood directly behind the guards.
“You know what.” Jason said loudly. The two guards and jumped and flung around, weapons raised. They saw Jason and the tall guard screamed. The short guard gave his comrade a sideways glance and the tall guard silenced himself. Jason smiled.
“WHO ARE YOU!” Yelled the short guard, he was trying hard to sound tough, Jason wasn’t convinced.
“I am the Shadow, perhaps you’ve heard of me?” Jason said, his voice cold and icy. The two guards exchanged a glance. They’d both heard the stories; of the Shadow. What he could do, who his father was. The short guards bravery failed and he fell to his knees whimpering. The tall guard began to hyperventilate. Jason whispered to himself and closed his eyes. When he reopened them he felt powerful. He looked down, always shocked at what he saw. His whole body was wrapped with a swirling vortex of moving shadows. He moved with the shadows and advanced upon the guards in a flash. He raised the now black blade and struck down hard onto the tall guards chest. He removed the blade swiftly and watched the guard fall gasping and gurgling blood. His death was near instant. He turned and grabbed the short guard whom had been attempting to crawl away. He lifted him up and looked him the eyes.
“Who told you I was coming?” Jason, or now, the Shadow, said, his voice echoing eerily as it escaped his mouth. The guard was panting and wracked with fear. The Shadow shook the guard making the short man gasp. “WHO!”
“Lord Rissonus... He exchanged the information for his life... Although I don’t think it saved him.” Responded the guard; stuttering badly and pausing constantly.
“Rissonus is dead?” Asked the Shadow, his curiosity getting the better of him.
“Y..Y..Yes... Please don’t kill me!” He pleaded.
“I don’t spare cowards or beggars!” The Shadow responded. He lifted his knife and slit the mans throat. Rissonus is dead, that means, I’ll be next. Shadow thought to himself, with that, he turned away from the castle and let the shadows around him dissipate. It is unwise to attempt this tonight... I will return though. Jason Entered a clearly, mounted his horse and rode full gallop away from the dark castle.
