The Naming

The camp was buzzing with excitement when Lightstripe entered camp that morning. He was longing to see Velvetfoot, he had been sent on a separate hunting party and he wanted to see his mate. He padded in and a lot of cats were looking and whispering when they saw him. He took his pigeon to the fresh kill pile and went looking for Velvetfoot, but he couldn't see her. His heart sunk and he dropped his head, but his sadness was short lived. He was about to go and rest in the warriors den when he heard the soft, calm voice of Velvetfoot behind him. He whipped around and his heart lifted, a smile smacked his face and he purred.
"Velvetfoot! There you are!" he purred loudly.
"Lightstripe! Where have you been?" She said trying to hide a chuckle.
"Hunting obviously," he said happily.
"I...I have some news," whispered Velvetfoot uncertainly. Lightstripe cocked his head, Velvetfoot was always confident and calm when she spoke never uncertain. By now they had brought all the eyes of clan to them. Cedarstar and Peachspots were watching very intently.
"What?" asked Lightstripe.
"I...I'm pregnant and going to have your kits and-"she began but stopped when the wind was knocked out of her by Lightstripe charging and embracing her in an affectionate rub. They purred and rolled on the ground.

"They're beautiful!" exclaimed Lightstripe. He was in the nursery laying next to Velvetfoot and staring in awe at the four little bundles of skin and fur, eyes closed and huddling around for milk.
"What shall we call them?" asked Velvetfoot calmly, also looking at the four bundles, she had a broad smile on her face.
"I...I don't know." Responded Lightstripe almost zombie like.
"I want to name one of the girls Silverkit," said Velvetfoot still smiling.
"And I want to name one of the boys Fogkit" murmured Lightfoot.
"Can I name the girl Birchkit?" said another voice behind them. Lightfoot looked up to see his mother Brindleface.
"Well..." muttered Lightstripe unsure.
"Of course you can!" exclaimed Velvetfoot, laughing.
"Thank you," said Brindleface releasing a sigh, she had really hoped they say yes, she wanted to name the other girl one this in remembrance of Lightstripe's sister whom died days after her birth and caused a lot of pain to the family.
"And the other boy?" asked Velvetfoot.
"Mudkit, after your father Velvetfoot, yes Mudkit." Said Lightstripe smiling to himself.
"Yes!" exclaimed Velvetfoot.
