O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-01-24 11:18:19 +0000 UTC]

Australia is very different. it is very difficult to find a place with this much old charm. Probably Europe will have similar "old charm" places.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DelightfulDolphin In reply to O-Gosh [2020-01-24 19:03:55 +0000 UTC]

Europe probably has a tonΒ of places with old charm, if you can get away from all the people, hehe. I hope the wildfires in Australia will die down soon...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-01-25 10:39:48 +0000 UTC]

It is much better here in Australia now, thank you. A rain has come and helped with the fires in Victoria. Even the air in Melbourne is much better now
As for Europe - you can find the true old charm with not many people in some of the traditional Polish villages. They are still the same as I left them so many years ago.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DelightfulDolphin In reply to O-Gosh [2020-01-27 18:14:16 +0000 UTC]

I am very glad to hear that, I hope the people there weren't affected too badly.
I've never heard much about Poland, aside from it being cold, haha. Perhaps I will get the chance to visit there one day.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-01-28 12:17:54 +0000 UTC]

Some of the people in the country area los everything, but the help is coming from everywhere. 3 lives were lost in Victoria.
Poland is great for travel. There are some amazing places to see there. Gdansk and Krakow are as stunning as any other old city in Europe. And there are the mountains (Zakopane) and the Mazurian lakes, and an amazing Malbork fortress, and many other stunning places. Still quite cheap for travellers with good tourist services. Highly recommended

I feel so bad for those families who lost so much, they've been in my prayers.
Those sound like beautiful places! Cheap is always good, haha. Is Poland your favorite European country to visit?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-01-31 10:48:31 +0000 UTC]

Poland is my home country. I spent the first 28 years of my life there so I am biased I love England and Italy the most, but I was also totally amazed by Slovenia and parts of France.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DelightfulDolphin In reply to O-Gosh [2020-02-02 19:51:04 +0000 UTC]

Are you sure you're biased? I can't tell at all Does Poland have cold winters? I would love to visit those countries someday soon. Or all of Europe ideally. Have you been to the region of Ardeche in France?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-02-04 10:56:20 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes winters in Poland are cold, it really depends on the year. Similar climate to the French one. No, I haven't been to Ardeche, but I traveled not that far from this area.

DelightfulDolphin In reply to O-Gosh [2020-02-05 17:36:16 +0000 UTC]

I like winters to be full of snow, it's much prettier than a gray and dreary winter.
I would like to travel to Ardeche sometime, I hear it's very beautiful.

I'm guessing you don't really get any snow in Australia? Thank you, I hope so too! But first, I have to visit my ancestral territory in Ireland

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-02-12 09:45:39 +0000 UTC]

We have a lot of snow for about 3 months each year in winter in the Australian Alps, about 350 km from Melbourne. Very good skiing conditions.Β
I would love to visit Ireland one day. One of my dreams. I read a lot about Ireland, because some of my favourite writers are Irish. Such a beautiful country and people.

DelightfulDolphin In reply to O-Gosh [2020-02-15 19:37:18 +0000 UTC]

I never would've thought you could ski in Australia! Have you skied there?
It is a beautiful country, and the people there have been so resilient throughout history, it's admirable. I can trace back my family there for 1,800 years, I'm very Irish, haha. And I have been learning the Irish language, I'd like to do my part to keep the culture alive.

O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-02-16 10:01:30 +0000 UTC]

No, I never skied here, but I went to the snow several times.Β
Yes, it is great to keep the culture of your heritage. I am trying to do it here in Australia - keeping our Polish traditions alive Β

I assume there aren't many Polish in Australia? It's a great thing you're doing, keeping your culture alive.

There is quite a large Polish community here in Melbourne. We have 2 Polish clubs and a number of Polish schools, churches and shops. Also once a year there is a Polish festival in the city attended by thousands of People Β

DelightfulDolphin In reply to O-Gosh [2020-02-23 15:44:50 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I never would've known! What is a Polish festival like?
My great-grandfather was from Poland, at the time it was Soviet, but the traditions have been lost to me, and overwhelmed by my Irish traditions.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-02-24 12:44:29 +0000 UTC]

The polish festival has a lot of fold dancing and singing, stalls with Polish food (dumplings, sausages, sour cabbage, donuts, cheesecakes and poppy cakes and some other food, and a lot of Polish beer of course. A lot of people, not only Poles, come to the festival. It is very nice and very popular. And it is all red and white like the Polish flag.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DelightfulDolphin In reply to O-Gosh [2020-02-26 19:44:55 +0000 UTC]

What is fold dancing? Reading that made me hungry, haha. That sounds like a very fun festival, and a good way to keep the culture alive. We have festivals here for most cultures, but they aren't as culturally accurate as they would be in the culture's home country. One day, I'd like to see a real Polish festival!

O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-02-28 09:37:12 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, my spelling error or autocorrect. Β It is folk dancing.Β
When we went to New York last year it accidentally happened on the Polish Pulaski day, but it was just a huge parade of Poles, and no sign of Polish food or dancing Still very nice.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DelightfulDolphin In reply to O-Gosh [2020-02-28 22:58:13 +0000 UTC]

Ohh, I should've guessed that, haha. From what I have seen, Polish folk dancing is somewhat similar to Gaelic folk dancing. One of my favorite bands is Polish, they're called Beltane, I like their folk-type music because it reminds me of Celtic music.
No food or dancing, that sounds like a boring parade, it needs some dancing to bring it to life!
Irish parades are always full of dancing. Not so much food though, mostly dancing and alcohol.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

O-Gosh In reply to DelightfulDolphin [2020-03-01 12:00:06 +0000 UTC]

ha ha it sounds like Polish festivals, lots of drinking and dancing.
I always thought rightly that the Polish and Irish people are very similar.
