Description Materials : watercolour pencils, opaque watercolour (white), and pigment-ink pens.

This is my entry for the β€œWinter Couples Contest 2011/12” [link] organized by and

Fanart of the characters Li Koyu (in green cloak) and Ran Shuei (in red comforter) from Saiunkoku Monogatari.
It is the illustration for my fanfic Conversation on a Winter's Day ... [link]
Saiunkoku Monogatari and its characters belong to Sai Yukino.

If anyone is wondering about the rose design on Koyu's cloak ... I just want to clarify that it was perfectly normal for ancient Chinese men (scholars) to wear clothings embroidered with roses and other flowers! Take a look at the reference, and you will see what I mean.

in fact it reminds me of Baoyu and Daiyu``haha``when they read a book together``

ε–η³•ηš„!
Your guess is so accurate!
Do you see Koyu's hand holding the book?
I searched for θΆŠε‰§ηΊ’ζ₯Όζ’¦ images to find a reference for how to draw this quintessentially Chinese way of holding a rolled up book.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TieriaDylandy In reply to obasan45 [2013-06-18 12:32:45 +0000 UTC]

it seems you have become quite familiar with those special internet words!(even better than me!haha```
yeah i think it is the Cloak that makes me think so.
why not try this posture [link]
it is almost the most famous scene in ηΊ’ζ₯Όζ’¦.
well,GJ!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

obasan45 In reply to TieriaDylandy [2013-06-19 01:38:53 +0000 UTC]

Ah! I know that picture!
It's from a China television serial of ηΊ’ζ₯Όζ’¦.
The casting is amazing.
All the characters look exactly like what I imagined them to be
(I read the English translation of ηΊ’ζ₯Όζ’¦)

hmmm ... that picture does not fit the Koyu and Shuei in my mind ...
Daiyu's pose is too demure/feminine for Koyu,
and Shuei is more likely to be teasing Koyu than studiously reading over his shoulder!

haha, no, you are still better than me!
I do not know what is "GJ".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TieriaDylandy In reply to obasan45 [2013-06-19 09:07:58 +0000 UTC]

really?now i know GJ is only Chinese English(i had thought it was transported from abroad since GJ=Good job.it seems english, isn't it?haha``
that serial is the best one(not one of the best)in my eyes!(i won't admit that newest one because it is totally a disaster
please don't mind the picture,i didn't think much at that time and i just thought it would be interesting(but i didn't thought about whether it would be suitable.i'm always so careless .haha~~~
so do you come up with the posture in your work accidentally then search or you search purposely to find an ancient posture at the beginning?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

obasan45 In reply to TieriaDylandy [2013-06-19 15:05:31 +0000 UTC]

haha ... of course it is English!
I do not know "GJ", but that does not mean the English-speaking internet community does not use it.

I am also not familiar with English internet slang (not just Chinese internet language).
Recently I just asked someone what is "STAHP". She said it is a cute way of saying "STOP".
So you see, it is just like your ζœ‰ζœ¨ζœ‰ ... I always need to ask people for explanations!

I saw the publicity photographs for the newest ηΊ’ζ₯Όζ’¦ serial.
Enough!
The women's hairstyles are so ridiculous, and irritating, I can't possibly enjoy watching the serial.
And Wang Xifeng looks so insipid and unintelligent!

No, no, there is no need to apologize!

For this picture, I wanted Koyu to be reading a book, but with only one hand (the other hand is on Shuei). I have always loved the Chinese way of holding a rolled up book in one hand, so I went searching the internet for such a reference photograph. I think it is especially appropriate for Koyu ... very scholarly!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TieriaDylandy In reply to obasan45 [2013-06-20 01:14:33 +0000 UTC]

oh,now i learn what means STAHP!(hey i learned a new word though i can't use it in my homeworkhaha``
as for the new serial, well, let's just neglect it as most people do!
are you planning for the next picture now?i remember that when i watch TV,one of the famous scene(here again=v is one is a seven-stringed plucked instrument(叀琴)while the other is brandishing a sword(θˆžε‰‘οΌ‰
though it is a question whether koyu could play it```just a suggestion!
these days i have been staying at home doing nothing(so boring!).i don't know what to do.and i'm waiting anxiously for my result.i'm afraid that i won't reach my ideal college (chances are not good)if i didn't make it,i would regret that i didn't go to singapore(two of my classmates have gone there and it seems not difficult,i even didn't join the exam because i don't want to stay there to work)

could you give me some advice?i don't want to stay at home and do nothing.i gotta do something i think!

obasan45 In reply to SauraAsuna [2012-06-08 17:28:12 +0000 UTC]

General things

For the background I don't outline with pencil. I use a very pale grey watercolour pencil to lightly outline the "big" things, like the pavilion, the tree trunk (not leaves), the wall/roof, the edge of the water, the bench, the stone carving behind the bench, and the big tree branches behind Koyu.

Although I use watercolour pencils, I only draw directly on the paper when I outline. For the rest, I take another piece of paper, and colour very thicky on it. Then I wet the brush, drop a few drops of water on the patch of colour, mix the water with the colour with the brush. Then paint from this patch of wet colour, like "normal" (same as when you use watercolour that you squeeze out from a tube and mix with water).

Colouring

In this picture, because I want a wintry/grey look for the background, I was actually painting with just greys and (very diluted) black, like a black and white photo. I added the colours after the shading etc was done.

Whites

The white bushes and leaves of the tree in the very far background is just the white of the paper, that is, NOT painting any colour.

But I wanted the snow in the near background to stand out more. Do you see patches of very bright white on the snow on the brances behind Koyu, and on the stone carving behind the bench?

For that bright white colour, I used white opaque water colour from a tube. I squeeze some on a palette, and use it very thickly, wetting the brush just enough to pick up the paint.

ahm ... hope that's useful ...

wow! now that I've recovered from my speechlessness ... wow!

I like how, despite the snow and wintry-cold, there is so much warmth in the scene. Must be your choice of a warmish hue in the stone carvings and walls ... and is that bright sunlight beaming down at the top left hand corner (above Koyu's head)?

Lovely details. Really like the snow-laden branches and twigs -- especially the spindly bushes in the background!

winter WARMTH!
Thank you for seeing the warmth!
I used "warm grey", and that really helped.

Nooooooo ... more like scanner-light!
The paper got a little warped.

Thank you! Those spindly bushes took an indecent amount of time!
I was like, geez ... how many more bushes before it starts looking right ...

heh heh, yaaaaa, I also like the snow-laden branches!
I had a great reference to work from.

Thanks for the too!
