1) I usually buy plaques of basswood that are already fabricated, but the problem is finding pieces that have a nice clean wood surface. Most of the time they all have knots in them or different colors to them so it's annoying at times.
2) The woodburn pen i'm using at the moment is the generic kind. i'm saving up money for the fancy one but it's expensive. the stain markers are around $4-6 a pop, and the wood varies in price. Anywhere from $2-20 and up. This 12 x 16 cost around $15. And lastly there is the sandpaper and polyurithane.
3) This one took roughly 16hrs to fully pencil and burn and stain. still need to polyurithane it though. plus might change the background some so i dunno lol.

Nah bud, I'd keep it bright. It's a bright vibrant image with a lot going on. 'Sides, who needs a background when the foreground looks as good as it does right?
