Description Acrylic on canvas board.

My Old English is very rocky indeed, but the text around it says, "Merlin waes micel dry and haefde micelne craft, his galdras waeron fremful. Wis ond milde he waes Arthurs leofost gefera"

Which is probably all wrong, but is MEANT to translate as, "Merlin was a great wizard and had great power, his charms were effective. Wise and kind, he was Arthur's most beloved companion."

(I've used their form of handwriting, so some of the letters, like w and s etc, don't look like our letters.)

Thank you. Though there's a spelling mistake in it that really annoys me now. (It should be "Arthures" not "Arthurs")

It's a very enjoyable show. It can be very silly...and the writing isn't always great...but the characters themselves are terrific, and the actors are (mostly) excellent.

Thank you so much! (Although there is a spelling mistake in the lettering that bugs the hell out of me now. My Old English has gotten a bit better since I wrote that, and I now realise it should be "arthures" instead of "arthurs". Oh well...)

Wow. Where did you learn Old English?

I am trying to teach myself from books, I really don't have an aptitude for languages so it's very slow going, but "ich eom" getting there.

(I'm not sure exactly WHY, as apart from Beowulf and a few rather lovely poems and riddles, there's not much you can actually DO with it once you've got the hang of it, but for some reason it appeals to me much more than something a lot more useful like Spanish or French or something.)

I've also got very into the history side of it too, (I'm reading my second biography of Alfred the Great at the moment), and I've toddled off to the British Museum to see the Sutton Hoo hoard and the Lewis chess pieces etc. For some reason that period in history seems to fascinate me.

Which books? I happen to be very good with languages, and I'm interested. My mom took Middle High German in college (ages ago), and she said that she enjoyed it. I'll learn Old English first

All languages are very interesting for me. I'm trying to conquer both French and German right now.

I love history, because of the differences in language at different times. (Everything is about language for me. Math: language of numbers and symbols. Science: language of the Universe. Religion: language of the soul. Etcetera.)

I've got "Complete Old English" by Mark Atherton, (that one's really good as it also tells you lots of background about society at the time as well as teaching you the language).

"First steps in Old English" by Stephen Pollington, (that is EXCELLENT!) I totally recommend that one!

"A guide to Old English" by Bruce Mitchell and Fred Robinson, not so good on teaching you how to learn it, (it's very old fashioned in its teaching style since it was first published in 1964), but it's got a good selection of texts in it to read and translate.

I've also got "Beowulf" with the anglo-saxon text on one page, and the modern english translation on the other, but I've lost that somewhere round the house and I can't find it.

I liked your idea of seeing every subject in terms of language, that's very poetic.

I love english, I'm very fond of that language. But I just seem to find it incredibly hard to pick up and remember other languages. I do wish I had more of a knack for it.

OOH THANKS! Will add to list of things to buy, along with extensive art supplies...

It's not poetic to me, it's just the way I think. Ever since fourth grade, when I was taught the sub-language of Algebra. It kind of stemmed from there...

I don't really understand people that don't really understand languages. The ones that are non-communicating math professors. The in-betweens (like you) I sort of understand. People like me, the natural language speakers, have a sort of "sixth" or "seventh" sense for languages. I, for example, can tell if something is a masculine, feminine, or neuter (in German) noun just by thinking for a sentence. Though I guess having two German aunts helps...

Awww, thank you very much!

(The leaves were copied from a book about trees, so you can practise your tree identification on it too...how useful is THAT. )

Hiya! Great work with this one, i really love the detail and the frame! In fact all the Merlin stuff you've put up lately is lovely! You looking forward to the new series coming out?

I've featured this painting in my journal by the way: [link]

Sorry I've taken SOOOOOO long to reply. Thank you so much for the lovely comment and for the feature.

Oh yeah, I was REALLY looking forward to the new series, and now it's started it's actually better than I'd hoped it might be.

(Now if they would only FINALLY bring out the full series of Supernatural season 5 so that I could rent it and finally see it, then all would be perfect.)

You're quite welcome, my lovely!

Isn't it just? These shows sometimes have a habit of losing momentum or just not being anywhere near as good by the third season, but I'm very impressed from the first episode!

Haha, is the full season 5 of SPN really not out yet?! How is that possible? Season 6 starts in a week or so.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ObsidianSerpent In reply to blackbirdrose [2010-09-17 17:49:20 +0000 UTC]

They are SOOOO slow at getting the SPN box sets out. The second half of the season 5 box set has JUST come out. But I want to buy the whole thing in one box as it's pretty much half the price of buying the two halves separately.

This is just how I fell behind in the first place. I'd missed the first three episodes of season 4, (I can't remember why), and I didn't want to start watching with the fourth episode and see it out of sequence.

So I waited for it to come out on DVD...but the box set of season 4 came out just AFTER season five started on TV. So I missed the beginning of season five!

So NOW I bet the box set of season five will come out AFTER season six starts.

Sorry, that was entirely too long an explanation. (but it's very frustrating!)

Haha, thats okay! Thats is really poorly thought out marketing/distribution. Or maybe very cunning, since they think we'll be so desperate that we'll buy each box set in two parts. Oooh, eeevvilll...

Haha. And they wonder why people like me turn to the internet to get our tv fix!

ObsidianSerpent In reply to blackbirdrose [2010-09-18 09:30:07 +0000 UTC]

I looked for it on the internet and couldn't find it.

(And I don't really like watching shows on the internet, it's not comfortable, I prefer seeing it on TV.)
