Description Illustration 1 of 4

Acrylic on canvas board 12" x 16"

One of four pieces of artwork done for this year's After Camlann Big Bang.  My lovely author PELYDRYN77  has been an absolute joy to collaborate with.  Unfortunately she’s realised that she isn't going to be able to meet the deadline for the BB and has taken the difficult decision that she needs to pull out. Instead she's going to post the first section now and finish the story off in slower time. The link to the first part of the wonderful story by Pelydryn is here  archiveofourown.org/works/1543…

I can't believe the amount of work you went to for this! Another beautiful painting! And I totally get the 'too small face' thing. It's amazing how much more difficult that is.

....that's just for noticing how much work went into it. Yeah, it did take a while

As regards painting small, it's not just that I can't see as well as I'd like to anymore, (even with my reading glasses on), but I find it really hard to manipulate the paint that precisely over tiny areas.  You look at something like this www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/a… by Alma-Tadema, and realise that it's only 30cms by 22cms...and the amount of detail he got into it is just staggering. I wouldn't necessarily want to paint with that level of photographic detail, but when you do want to be able to go in close and do some detailed work, like on the face, I'd love to know how he did it.  I assume just ridiculously teeny-tiny brushes and extremely thin paint.

That is pretty incredible, and I understand totally what you're saying. Even when I use tiny brushes, the paint itself has thickness and is difficult to apply minutely, and then you have to try to BLEND! I think you've done really well with the tiny details, the scarf, the face, the hands; it really is a work you can be proud of.

The details on this one... Whoa, not just Merlin but the landscape also. You certainly are very talented. I always enjoyed your work. Great to see something new.

Thank you very much.  This one is much bigger than I usually work as I wanted to get some landscape in but not have Merlin's face too impossibly small to work on.
