「 History 」 . . .
Shesta was born into the faction of Diamonds as the first child of a family that held rules above everything. For generations, this family adopted the role of librarians and he was expected to do the same the second he was brought into the world.
Shesta had a relatively normal childhood. He was a bright child, always bustling with excitement when it came down to learning and having a whole library at his disposal only added to the experience. He'd usually stay inside his home, reading and learning about rules as his parents wished, though novels could also be counted in his favorites. His only responsibility at such an age was to help his parents with the library as they thought the younger he started, the faster he'd grasp the dynamics of it; then he'd go back inside... it was quite the routine.
His young mind was prone to wander through all kinds of books and one day, he found something interesting: a book on Knights. The first chapters got him absolutely entranced with stories about their feats and unwavering loyalty, how they'd offer protection and salvation to those in times of need, but above all to never give up on your dreams. However, his parents didn't share the same enthusiasm and Shesta quickly learnt to keep his comments to himself.
Around his seventh birthday Shesta received the first impression of what a real Knight was. The same knights he had read so much about were just feet away from him, as they passed by on their way to the faction of Hearts. Their composure awed him so that he was overcome with the determination to be like them someday. Nonetheless, as time went on Shesta realized how little he really knew about becoming a knight. It didn't matter if he decided to train behind his parents' backs or if he had read all of the books in existence about them because he was nowhere closer to achieving his goal. Shesta was aware that he lacked the strength and noble heritage needed to become a knight. Still, this didn't disappoint him, for he also knew that to every problem encountered he would find a solution.
With his childhood nearing its ends, Shesta grew frustrated with his dream. He was not exactly a patient child and even if he quickly devoured one book after another he found himself incapable of giving it realization, because he still needed a master to lead his way into knighthood. Shesta figured that although he could still partake into the training if he requested so, there was no guarantee he would be accepted as an official knight once finished. Skills were important but those alone didn't take you very far in a world where the election of your role was dependent of so many things, after all, nobility was important in the faction of Hearts, and that was where knights proceeded from.
Not long after he had given up on becoming a knight, a second impression made its way into Shesta's life, this time in the form of a promising and young blacksmith. The man had visited the library and requested a book about weapons, earnest to expand his knowledge on them. Shesta grew curious of him. After all, many customers entered and left daily, and he recognized them to be mainly scholars; no people such as this man would wander inside his domain. Finally, his curiosity won over and this led him to talk to the young man, starting a long query about his role. He was a blacksmith, he had said, a dealer and crafter of weapons.
- "I want to craft the best swords in the world!" - The man exclaimed. When Shesta questioned him about his motives, he simply replied - "Well, that is quite obvious. So everyone can protect themselves with my creations. After all, a shining knight is nothing without his armor and weapon"
That did it. It was like his words ignited a flame inside of Shesta and nothing could force it to fade away. If he couldn't be a knight, what was second best thing? A blacksmith, of course! With a sudden flow of excitement, he thanked the man profusely and ran away to the back of the library in order to stock up on information about his newfound obsession; leaving the poor man confused as to what he had done.
In the following years, Shesta occupied most of his time developing the abilities he thought a blacksmith could use; you name it, he learned it. He focused mainly in dexterity. He knew it was needed to craft materials into wonderful weapons. Shesta would do everything and anything, from folding paper to building castles of cards. He also needed endurance and strength, particularly in his hands, so he'd exercise by carrying a large amount of books every day. It was around this time that Shesta developed a particular interest in both chains and mathematics. Chains provided him with useful knowledge about the strength of metals and the value of unity; mathematics on the other hand proved amusing and practical when dealing with complex designs. Through it all, his parents never suspected a thing and they felt pretty delighted with their son's devotion to his future role as librarian.
On Shesta's thirteenth birthday, his father gave him a monocle; telling him of its value as a family heirloom and how it had belonged to many of their ancestors, proving helpful in more than one occasion. Shesta couldn't see what assistance such an object would provide to him but accepted it nonetheless. During the birthday lunch, his parents asked him about the role he would take in the future... but what they heard shocked them to the core. Shesta felt so happy that for a change, his parents were so interested in hearing him out that he blurted out his wish to become a blacksmith. His parents were horrified and for months they argued with Shesta, forcefully requesting for him to change his mind and rebellious ways.
Fed up with his parents' constant lectures, unreasonable demands and their inability to lend him their support; Shesta decided to leave his home. His parents did everything they could to stop him, especially at such an age because their family had a rule that 'No member should leave the house at the age of thirteen' for they were superstitious that this would give them bad luck. Shesta left at night, his parents' pleas falling on deaf ears. He wasn't sure where to go exactly. At first his intention had been to travel to the faction of Spades, but even though he read that their knowledge of weapons was unrivaled; unless he was hell bent on breaking a rule he would never be allowed inside, and Shesta considered after much thought that committing a crime was the last thing he ever wanted to do.
Having left with little money and not a real place to stay he settled for the woods nearby his faction. If he decided to lie low in the day and just return to the faction in the night, the chances of his parents finding about his whereabouts from someone were unlikely. He figured he could find food in the woods and if it came down to it, he might have to resort to stealing to survive. For now though, he'd focus on finding a master that could teach him the arts of a blacksmith. Peering to the sky through his messy blond bangs, he sighed and realized he should of start asking wandering travelers.
Time, unreliable as it was in Wonderland kept moving forward, yet Shesta was nowhere close to find anyone willing to teach him. Without food and money left, Shesta found himself pondering about his next action... Could he really steal from someone? The only option he had otherwise was to return home but would his parents even accept him back? Well, he was at least determined to try, just to see how far he could go. Waiting silently behind a tree he saw his first target passing by the road: a seemingly old man in appearance, gruff and big, certainly not a good opponent. The man was in a rush by the looks of it and Shesta soon saw why. A group of men were following him, and they didn't exactly look friendly. Once they caught up to the man, they started to fight and he was getting quite the beating. Shesta knew he only had two options, either to run away or to help the man, and the latter was less than appealing. He knew there was no way he could beat those thugs but could he leave the man alone? ...No, he definitely wasn't that kind of guy. Feeling the need to bang his head against a tree, Shesta rushed to the man's side. As he had predicted, he was no match for them but somehow through it all, the man and Shesta managed to fight them off long enough to run away, though at a price: he was beaten up pretty bad, leaving his back and upper arms forever marred with wounds that would scar.
With impressive effort Shesta and the man made it all the way back to the faction of Diamonds, and though the man hadn't said anything nor did he thank Shesta, he rented a room inside a hotel and allowed the kid to stay. Any attempt of Shesta to initiate a conversation with the man soon proved futile, leaving the young blond to figure how to tend to his own wounds. Shesta went to sleep that night wrapped in make-shift bandages, groaning everytime his muscles pulled on the fresh wounds with his movements, but thankful that he had a bed to rest on. The next morning the man was gone.
Back to step one, Shesta decided to try his luck at finding a job. He managed to get one at a saloon, The Demented Jack, a pun on Cheshire and his well-known phrase. Shesta worked there as a waiter, the owner believing that age didn't matter as long as he did the job right. From night to dawn he would work there, and during the day he used his bright mind and wits to play concentration tricks on distracted travelers, entertaining them and gaining a little profit from it. Although things were not quite how he imagined they would be; he had yet to give up on his dream. It was his boundless optimism that kept him going.
On one of those long nights when drunken men were often causing a ruckus in the saloon, the third and last impression literally fell on him. The same old man from that time at the road was so drunk that he lost consciousness and fell on Shesta after getting into a fight. He wondered what the man could be doing in the place, if he had family in Diamonds and if they'd be worried about him. Shesta asked around for the house of the man and the owner of the saloon told him the man had a small house in the woods; he was from the faction of Spades and usually stayed in that house when traveling, though as he pointed out, he rarely left his own faction.
Led by a drunken man throughout the thick forest Shesta managed to bring him to the right place, much to his surprise. Shesta left him at his home and returned to resume his job. Nights and nights later, it had become a routine. The man would drink until dawn and fight to hell and beyond, then Shesta would take him home. He often wondered why he did it but found no satisfactory explanation to his lack of reasoning. One day, the man approached Shesta at the saloon. He was curious about his behavior and had asked the owner for information on him. He told Shesta to follow him to his home and he silently wondered if the man was sober at all. Once inside, the man led him to the back of the house so Shesta could appreciate the small workshop that he had failed to see the previous times.
- "I heard ya wanna be a blacksmith kiddo. Ask no questions and you can work here" - the man had said. If Shesta was shocked, it didn't show on his face, even more so, he started wondering if he was asleep and dreaming, as he scratched his head and took in his surroundings. The old blacksmith introduced him to another guy his age, Chase Heskell, whom he recognized as a fellow worker from the saloon, now also his fellow pupil.
From then on, Shesta and Chase spent their days in the old workshop learning the ways of the blacksmith, and their nights working as waiters in the saloon. Even though the man was now their mentor, he showed it in a rather unorthodox way. He would often leave his pupils alone for long periods of time as he returned to the faction of Spades, and other times, he'd almost behave like a father to them. The man himself never gave them his name and it was clear to the boys that he had no intention of doing so, but it didn't stop them from feeling curious about his reasons. With no name to refer to him at all, the guys simply called him 'Boss' and most of their free time went to keeping their teacher out of trouble and far away from the alcohol.
One day he approached them after a long night of drinking - "Once I have nothing to teach ya, I'll test ya both. The one that has in my opinion, the better skills, will have my tools and lotsa currency to open up a small shop" - He told them with a hearty laugh and a pat to his stomach, but the boys dismissed the news as the effects of wine and simply continued their work.
Years later, the time of their test came along. Shesta, who had worked with dedication, ended up as the winner of their little contest, much to the awe of both young men, who had thought their master inebriated at the time. Chase congratulated the equally shocked blond, letting him know he would return to the faction of Hearts and open up his own shop as well, and to make sure to visit sometime. After all, both had bonded over the years through the unusual tasks that their master found for them to perform.
Thanking his master and leaving to start a new life, he set up a shop on the other side of the faction of Diamonds to avoid encounters with his parents, which he named X. For the next two years, Shesta did nothing but concentrate on his job and finally, he achieved his goal, earning the title he desired at the age of twenty-five. His shop had become quite successful and the weapons he made improved in quality every day. Of course, rivals appeared here and there, but his creations had a unique style to them, a characteristic than often appealed to his customers.
When he has free time, Shesta spends it accompanying his friend Kalliope, a renowned diplomat, to lunch; or visiting Chase at his shop, curious to find about new materials, something the former noble has a knack for. Shesta also plays with the kids that frequent the vicinity of his shop from time to time, hoping to create happy experiences for them, whose lives he knows could turn out as hard as his once was, but as long as they never give up on their dreams, Shesta knows it's worth it.
