Imagine different worlds splintered off of this one. Each is a slightly different reality populated by a different power. Ruled perhaps by a different entity or god. You may if you know how make a crack between the realms and slip thru and even tap the power that bleeds through. This could perhaps be a realm of Shadow, run by the Raven-god. If you've never read the Malazan series by Steven Erickson i highly recommend.
