Description Just Like You.

Wow, so, a lot to say about this picture. I actually had been working on and off on this for several weeks. I wasn't really motivated at first because it's a self-portrait. But then I came across this picture by ~ToeTagsAndBodyBags :

Pretty awesome concept, no? Well there's an even bigger message behind the image. A message about acceptance and change. She actually came up with this really awesome idea to have other's "join the revolution" and asked other artists if they would contribute a drawing of themselves in some way supporting the cause.

You can read more about it here in this journal: [link]

Now to answer some things before I get bombarded with a million versions of the same questions:

Q. What are you?

A.
I actually see this question showing up a lot. And I always answer the same way: Human. Because I am human. I'm human. You're human. He, she, they, we are all human.

We are all human.

And yet we can't seem to see eachother that way.

Q. Fine. What is your sexual orientation?

A.
Because this is always the question that follows. I actually find it really weird that this seems to be a big deal for people. I mean I can only imagine what it's like to be around when you meet someone for the first time.

"Hi. Nice to meet you. My name is John. What's your sexual orientation?"

Does no one else notice how ridiculous that sounds?

But if you must have an answer; I most identify with pansexual. I like people for who they are and not what they've got in their pants. Which, if anything, doesn't seem like such a bad way to view people.

Feel free to disagree.

Q. Ew. Gross. Does that mean you'd date a girl?

A.
Yes, it does mean precisely that. But my personal life really isn't any of your business.

Q. Gross. I'm a girl and she left me a nice comment. That means she must like me.

A.
Alright, it's time to be mature. First off, it's kind of shallow to just assume someone likes you because they leave you a comment. Secondly, that would mean that you like everyone you ever left a nice comment to.

Q. You're going to hell.

A.
Good. I'm sure I'll meet you there. Also, that's a declarative sentence. Not a question.

I don't know why this always comes up. I'm not really religious so it doesn't bother me so much as it would someone else. But I do think it's pretty ignorant to say I'm headed toward some fiery pit of damnation. And I'm pretty sure somewhere in the bible it says something along the lines of, "Don't judge lest you be judged."

If your "God" says homosexuality is wrong, so be it. But I'm pretty sure he didn't say it was alright to ridicule, mistreat, disrespect, maim, wound, or kill them. I don't think there's a passage in the bible where it says it's fine to "Stone your homosexual neighbor".

The bible was meant to be a guideline. It was meant to guide people to do right. Do you honestly think this hate is right?

I feel sorry for you if you do.

Was drawn using CS5 and my Wacom tablet. Approximately 6 or so hours went into this off and on.

Kudos to anyone who noticed the rainbow effect was done with leaves. I couldn't resist. After all, I bleed autumn.

This is so absolutely beautiful, I just can't tell you enough... how much I love it...
both in image AND message behind it. YUP!

Let me just say THIS about your first question. In my first year of college, I took a Human Sexuality class,
from a really awesome professor, a little petite lady who was not shy about anything, and I will always be glad for that. Anyway, her whole motto throughout the course, that has STUCK with me the rest of my LIFE, is that
we are HUMAN first. Human, first and foremost, and then... yeah so on and so forth after that... sure.

But it's just that, it's really the VERY MOST important thing, and sadly MOST humans seem to lose sight of that very thing that makes us all alike! We are Human First! And that is why I always do my Human News Article once a year on dA. For one thing, but I strongly believe in the Human cause, and I'm a member of the
HRC group- The HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN where lgbt are helped to be ensured of their basic EQUAL rights.
You may already know the group. If not, it's Check it out.

Anyway, regarding everything else, I've spoken MUCH, also on this issue, especially when I posted my photos on campaigning for legalizing marriage for gays and lesbians and bisexuals in California...
I don't remember if you saw about it... but there's the sub-gallery about Photo-journalism, where I've also got pride photos, too. Stuff like that...

Quite glad you like it Tea. And I appreciate the insightful comment. Always enjoyable to see thoughtful responses on pieces like this. Also lets me know that despite having been a winded artist comment people have taken the time to read it.

I like this, and kudus to you for doing it this way.
I agree, about the questions about sexual orientation, cause it's pretty irrelevant and really sounds strange to me. There's so many drawers and boxes people get put in that it'll be wonderful to leave those things behind, but I'm realistic and know that won't happen anytime soon.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on this. Always great
to hear other's thoughts on the situation. Sadly, I do agree
that it's going to be a long time before people stop wanting
to label and pick people apart. Thanks again.

Love the picture, love the message. I might bring this in to my GSA meeting, along with the one you linked. The world needs more people thinking like this. <3

PS: Pansexual? Me too.

OctoberAzriel In reply to kazumisangel [2010-09-06 04:18:39 +0000 UTC]

Glad you liked it. Tried my best to word it as I feel it. I honestly don't get why it still seems to be such a big deal. But such is the way with situations like this. Shame really.

Oh, and if you wanted to use it for your GSA meeting that happens to be perfectly fine with me.

PS: Cool to know. : )

well first of all, I love love love the picture. secondly, I love love love your ACs. This issue has always been important to me, even though I'm heterosexual. I was rumored to be a lesbian for pretty much my entire middle-and-high-school career, and while the accusation didn't really bother me, it still pissed me off that it would matter that much to people if two girls kissed each other on the cheek as a sign of affection. Really? Go to Europe, people.

Anyway, that's my rant, and I was wondering if contributions by straight people were allowed in the group thing, since doesn't say in her journal. I suppose I could ask her. That would be more productive, wouldn't it?

I'm glad you like the picture. And sorry to hear about the
trouble you went through in high school.

As far as contributing, I'm pretty sure anyone who wants to
is allowed to add their own drawing. Just, if you do, leave
a link to it in her journal.

I really like this idea. I will say I am a Baptist, and most Babtists or religious people I know for that matter, are homophobes. But I am not and don't undstand there problem. I know waht you mean about the sexuality question, it is rediculous to ask like that, it makes since to care about who they are and NOT whats in their pants. Being rude to people and making ignorent usumtios because they're homosexual is rude and pointless.

I really like the picture, you did a very nice job.^^
