Description First appearance: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)

Queen Gohma from ”The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time”. She is an arthropod-like creature that Ganondorf has placed inside the Kokiri people’s guardian, the Great Deku Tree, to slowly wither him from within as a punishment for not giving Ganondorf the Kokiri Emerald. Link must now prove himself a worthy hero and free the tree from his arachnid agony.
Queen Gohma attacks with her clawed legs, and by spawning Gohma Larvaes from her backside to assist her in battle.

Queen Gohma has the glory of being the first three-dimensional boss in the Zelda series, as well as being the first boss I’ve ever fought in the series. Sure, she is probably one of the easiest bosses ever (heck, she can be defeated in less than a minute!), but boy did she give a powerful first impression. The way she walks around in the ceiling and force you to look up, her incredibly creepy appearance, the dark and ominous environment. Even the bizarrely cute and frankly pathetic Gohma Larvaes came off as rather creepy during the battle, just because of the atmosphere. After fighting other Zelda bosses, you can laugh about how ridiculously easy she is to defeat, but let’s face it, she was terribly hard to battle the first time. With ”OOT” being my first Zelda game ever,  I can still recall how much I struggled with defeating Queen Gohma, not in a small part because of how frikkin' scary she was.
Her design is very detailed and complex, but still memorable. She has that kind of appearance you see something new on everytime you look at her. It’s frankly impossible to say what kind of creature she’s actually based on (I can see some spider and crustacean, but that’s just a vague guess).
Overall, Queen Gohma is a worthy first boss. Indeed, I would say she is one of the best, if not the very best first boss in video game history. It is much because of her powerful first impression. All hail the Queen!

This piece was both tricky and easy to draw. Tricky because of the Queen’s complex design and amount of details, easy because of just that; a complex design may look reasonably good regardless of angle and perspective. The shading was tricky at times, but I think it came out pretty well. Overall, this was easier and became better than I eaxpected. Not perfect of course, but still.
