Not raped if willing & if ol' Sockhead doesn't know how good he has it, all that book know-how means jack squat in real situations.
IMO, Eddy, for all his bravado, has a problem proving himself as much of anything of value, which is why Lee's challenges are something he would glady accept, if only to placate his damaged ego; Ed may be not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but that's because he's blissfully innocent, so the thought of romance scares him, even though May basically would baby him, letting him do whatever he wants; Edd may be the most popular of the three boys with arguably the hottest of the Kanker sisters, but even so, he's massively shy & reserved, so Marie's forward aggressiveness intimidates him, even if he were to man up & take notice in the goth-punk clothed girl enough to see past the tomboyish dominance & into the sweet side she would long to present to him.
So really, in the end, for all their problems, the relationships were created for the same reason that Kevin/Nazz & Jimmy/Sarah were created, since the Kankers would be the the trailer park female counterparts of the Eds, with Lee & Eddy both being braggarts, Ed & May both seemingly lacking in the smarts department (i.e. they're not dumb, but they're not the brightest bulb in the room, either), & Marie--for all of the differences she & Edd have--being sweet & shy on the inside, whereas Edd has been known to hide a personality opposite his natural one (as per the episode when he goes crazy, all because he couldn't get his required shower of the day in or as per the reverse psychology ploy he tried on Marie that only brought her closer to him, when she made sure that the whole plot backfired).
