Description This is another in the same series as St. Crow, but I beleive my skills have progressed in leaps and bounds (and possibly jumps too) since then.

I've always loved owls, they were just so magestic and myeterious in their silence, gracefull too. It seemed to me that if Eagles were the kings of the daytime sky, then Owls must be the Queens of the night sky.

Maybe soon i'll come up with a story for the Owl Regent, who she is. I know her charachter, but putting it into words on a friday night after work is too difficult.

I gave this work to my dad for fathers day, because I couldnt afford a present he deserves.

A3 with ballpoints and no whiteout (so yes there will be mistakes, its traditional media, deal with it)
Owl was referenced from this [link] beautiful peice of DA stock, belonging to ~LoveLikeHeroineStock , the feathers took me hours and hours and ruined my eyes.

It took me a few days on and off to do, although i did finish it the morning i left to visit my parents.

Comments are always welcome, as are constructive critiques, please tell me what your impression of her is, id love to know!

[EDIT] I didn't realise a bug had placed this in the "anime and manga" category, this has been fixed now, sorry for the confusion!

Please respect me as the artist and don't steal, copy, or use this artwork without my express and written permission. If you want to share, link it. Theives will be hunted, shot, drawn and quatered then fed in little strips to the Queen.

I think if my girl gave me something that she'd put so much time and effort and talent and love into, I'd just cry my eyes out for happiness. What a lovely gift, and a wonderful character. Did you ever get around to writing her story?

no, I didn't! I had totally forgotten! But the writing mood has hit me of late so I should probably give it another go thanks for reminding me!

He seemed to like it better than the screwdriver and socks I got him last time I bought him a fathers day present He went and got it framed, and I think the socks got thrown out secretly. Thanks for your lovely comments

Lol, its done in ballpoint pens, not pencils and its a bit difficult to trace through watercolour paper, its rather thick.

Wow, that is amazing! I love the work, as a whole, but here eyes really stood out to me a lot. She, herself, is very owl-like.

Thanks heaps! Yeah I tried to make her appear as owl like as possible, as though she wasso in tune with her creatures that she was almost becoming one, but without cliched things like wings or masks. I really need to egt around to writing the backstory and puting it up!
I'm really glad you liked it!

Backstory *sigh* I know what you mean. I have a character posted and he still needs his backstory written (I have it laid out and everything XD), but I'm too lazy to do anything! Oy, the trials of being a procrastinator. Well, you're welcome for the comment, and I am very glad to have gotten some awesome feedback from you too. Artists need to interact more often.

Its annoying hey? Its sitting there in your head perfectly formed, it should have the decency to type itself up and save you the trouble.

I agree, artists need to interact! More questions need to be asked about artworks (and not ones that are already answered in the artists comments lol)! how did you find my pic if you dont mind me asking, I always find it interesting to see where it starts.

Yeah, I was looking for owl references for one of my scraps and just kinda happened upon it. I thought to myself, "Ooooh, spifty! Black and white! (It's my media ) So, I just jumped in and commented. It's a great piece, and yeah, artists should ask more questions.

Oh man I love owls so much, but have you found its really hard to get quality stock of birds? Other than pigeons of course. I can hardly ever find any good poses in sharp focus... unless they're fully bang-snap photography works which I would feel guilty about using. Although if you want owls *gurukitty has some awesome stock, but they are of a horned owl, and not the species in your scraps.

amerime In reply to oddballoffun [2007-10-24 13:01:15 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's okay! I like horned owls too, so that might come in handy. Yeah, I've noticed it's severely hard to find good stock, even of people. They're either only kinda doing to pose you want, or not doing it at all. XD

With people I usually use myself. I draw on my bed and have a conveniently placed wall sized mirror opposite (nothing sus eh?) which I use for poses. "hey how does that go? oooooh i see" then people walk past my room and see me throwingsome dramatic pose or staring intently at my hand and get all funny about it.
For dudes... dudes are harder, I used to use my bf, but he turned into a wang so hes not here for reference anymore (damnit, he was a good reference if not a good bf)
Because I'm detail obsessed and OCD about everything being species right, I need to use references for animals and birds, I gotta have every feather correct in size and markings or I cringe when I see it.
Owls so far have turned out to be the most fun, because they look so mysterious and regal... and are just beautiful anyway. Ravens are awesome but harder to make look as intelligent as you know they are. And the fact that they are black allover makes detail almost impossible without a reference.

But the ting I would love to see more of in stock (other than awesome flying, diving or kill shots of birds of prey) Is interesting humans, or interesting poses. theres too many "look off into middle distance" or "collapsed on the floor" stock. I need running and jumping and falling and fighting and forshortening and facial expresssions! you know how hard it is to get a realistic rage scream face?
I'm half tempted to make my own stock acccount just with these things because I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs them, but I have no time, or any skill with a camera.

amerime In reply to oddballoffun [2007-10-27 02:38:37 +0000 UTC]

I've actually been thinking of JUST that. Making a stock account for the poses everyone is looking for. It's so hard to find appropriate things, so you have to, you know, tweak it. A mirror is good, but it sucks to have to be constantly contorting your body to get the right position (good exercise, though XD ). Sorry that I don't have much to say, I'm kinda . . . shy around new people.

As for details . . .

I'm a perfectionist most of the time too. Every piece seems to pale in comparison to what I had envisioned. I suppose, on some level, every 'artist' is a sadist. We love to beat ourselves up! And we come back for MORE! X_X

oddballoffun In reply to amerime [2007-10-29 03:01:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh man, I thin thats the goal of every artist: to get to the level of awesome that you can get on paper exactly what is in your head. Its definantly mine anyway. I'm almost there with ballpoints, but Im such a perfectionist I need to be able to do it with any medium in order to be happy.

Don't be sorry, we're having an grand old conversation! You know what I think would be the best invention ever? A little maniquin doll thing that is perfeclty realistic with anatomy and musculature and bending and stuff. It would never work, but damn I would buy it! Or even just a manni doll that is just slightly more realistic than the ones you buy atm. Mum bought me one, but really its just for decoration, because none of its joints bend properly, and its all out of proportion. But it is cute and I can dress it in capes and stuff.

Ah, yes, the ever elusive "get your idea out the way you want it, or not at all" thing. It's one of my greatest downfalls. I have scrapped whole projects because they came out a little less than what I wanted, so they were crap in my eyes. My girlfriend just sees this and is like, "What's wrong with you?! That's a masterpiece!_!" XD She's so cute, though!

I WISH they were make a maniquin like that ;_; I have one, and it's exactly like you said. Unmoveable, but just as cute. ^.^ My cat likes to knock mine off the book shelf, but my Sebastian kitty is a Maine Coon, so he often knocks things off of shelves for amusement. LOL! I've never dressed my manni up in a cape or anything, though. XD
