It's weird realising how long ago it already is that I first saw this painting - almost exactly a year. Still feels like much shorter, though. Just as much as I adored it back then, I still do so now - painting interactions between species is fantastic, especially when it's done in such a realistic and beautiful way. Wonderful how you made both their eyes visible, underlining their visual contact even more. Also, I must say I'm still endlessly envious of your ability to paint water - those choppy waves with little splashes on top are simply spot on.

okay, not exactly.
i have found a picture in paul tixiers gallery.
the orcas pose look a little like yours.
and there is also sturm and a seagull
i search it for minutes, cant found.

Oh! I love Paul Tixier's photos but didn't use any as reference. I've painted a stormy sea before so I just built on what I learned the first time and didn't reference the orca. I used some of my own gannet photos for the bird.

Thank you so much! I learn more every time I put paint to canvas, so the it's really just a case of trial and error, and more trial and error... I sometimes add a retarder to my mixtures to keep them wet and more easily blendable for longer, and usually paint wet-on-wet too.

Gorgeous! I saw your work when I was at the Aquarium the other week (that gorgeous piece of the mantas) and just about had a heart attack. Its sorta different, seeing your work on the screen, versus seeing it in real life and realizing OHMYGOD YOU ACTUALLY DO WORK AT THE AQUARIUM!
