Of course we can't talk about Undertale without talking about Toriel.

She is the Queen of the monsters, the wife of Asgore and mother of Asriel and Chara. She is also a born comedian, a natural teacher and excellent cook. She is welcoming, friendly, wise, dorky and very caring. But being all those quality, she is also a very sad person, anxious of being abandoned, traumatized by the lost of her two children and wounded by the behavior of her husband. She was seeking for peace, she lived through the War, she is also slightly alcoholic (Thank you Toby for this information) and constantly tries to fill the gap left by her loss.

She is a broken woman. Let's face it. She adopt Frisk at first sight (and all human that fell down) but was ready to lock them in the ruins and battled them when they decide to leave her. But one thing we tends to forgot: she is also a monster boss. She is immortal and has already lived a thousand of years. Of all monster and Flowey aside, I think she is the one who experiences the deepest despair. She is trying very hard to keep things up, but exiled herself and gave up when things turned to dark for her.

So when she adopted Frisk for good, she probably will have doubts and fear that Frisk's well being will eventually heal. But her confidence in raising a new child still remains rather fragile. It is obvious, from all the efforts she made at the very beginning of the game when meeting him, that her desire to protect is almost obsessional because deep down she can't forgive herself the death of her sons. And proportionally, she turns her back when things don't lean the way she wants, unable to face her past. For example, when she realize she can't make Frisk happy keeping them in the ruins, she let them go, warning them against Asgore, but doesn't propose to escort them. Instead, she goes hide and stays silent the entire game. It took her everything she had to realize that Frisk could be in serious danger out there and to avoid it she simply could stand against Asgore.

In Unaltered Reset, I will try to explore this trait of her personality. I won't lie she is a character that is really mysterious to me. But hey, she is one thousand years old, you can't expect to understand everything about her that easily. Sans often come to the house to support the mother. She can't help but worry that Frisk will end up like Chara. She also have difficulty to deal with Flowey (especially after being told again who he really is). Tyreen's arrival won't help her, since Tyreen is the one who actually raised Frisk and know more about him than any one in the Underground. Which is also the reason why Sans have difficulty to put up with the new comer.

There will be very painful moments for Toriel in the story, but she is an adorable character. And fortunately, she is loved and blessed by many friends. Even if some of them, still think she is a shaved version of Asgore... Nyeh Heh Heh!
