Description Hmm, they should start a conga line.
Anyway, my submission to the Werewolves at Heart monthly theme:Freestyle!
I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. I wanted to do something that everyone could enjoy. And only, like, two hours before the 30th of June ends. Not cutting close at all. To be fair I had computer issues that prevented me from getting on. That's also why some of the anatomical problems didn't get fixed. Also, keep in mind, the goal was to illustrate a concept not create a masterpiece.
The point of this isn't to say "these are the archetypes, stick to them!" or anything like that. There are certainly many werewolf types and looks that didn't make it. My personal favorite isn't even on this.
The idea was to simply identify themes in the media(and our imagination) about type of character:The Werewolf. The actual point of it all I'll leave to be figured out.

While drawing this, it got me thinking about each one, either as individuals or as a group. Here's my thoughts on them, starting from the left.

Many of you will say this look is out, but I disagree. If written, or performed, or directed right he could be the creepiest of all. There's something about human like creatures that is simply unnerving. At first glance our mind recognizes the human traits, but the predatory aspects clashes with this first view, creating a distorted interpretation of the creature. It looks human but how it moves, the noise it makes, it's animal gaze tells us different. H.G. Well's “Time Machine” and the movie “Descent” use monsters that look very human like, but act predatory and animalistic, creating a disturbing insight on what we could be. On the plus side he has spectacular mutton chops.

Pain, Torment; this is what this werewolf feels. And he is conscious through every second of it. His human body has been unnaturally twisted and mutated into the form of a monster. This isn't pleasant, and why should it be? How could a transformation into an animal possibly go well? What kind of a madman would wish this agony upon anyone. It should not be. It should not be.

Things are perfect for this were. The Transformation is easy. He has a perfect physique. And an impervious pelt. And is lives harmoniously with nature. His human form ain't looking so bad either. Everything is great – until pack politics come into play. Then those hunters – and don't fall for a human girl, they're nothing but trouble. At least this guy can escape as a simply feral wolf, or a human. Oh and for some reason they're usually from an undefined Native American tribe.
Iron Maiden? Hell yeah. This guy, whether happy about his curse or not, will cause absolute carnage at whatever he does. He's likely to be the main character, the head honcho. After all, would you disagree with those big, gorilla forearms? He's no longer slave to the shadows of the horror genre, no, he's out there in plain sight - most likely in an action sequence or committing a felony. He must go to a good manicurist, because those claws never seem to snap, even while loping on all fours. He can also appear with or without a tail. If it is without – expect everyone to complain.

Survival is the name of the game, and he will kill to win. This transformation is permanent. The human mind has completely deteriorated away. Might as well stake a territory, get a mate, and hunt. People will call it evil, but they forget this is raw nature. They just don't like not being on top of the food chain. Inevitably a hunter will come along to take care of the local town's dark problem, but not until he's bitten. And so the cycle starts again.

They're all pretenders to the throne, for the original legends involved transformations into so called normal (often tailless)wolves. Without the original legends there would be no werewolf movies or literature today. Unfortunately not many like to look back on them for inspiration. Whether physically shapeshifting, or using a magical personal item such as a skin to transform, werewolves in classic tales were feared by medieval towns. Being employed by the devil or simply men who take the form of wolves to carry out malicious crimes is commonplace in folklore. Once feared as serial killers, modern literature has turned them into the puppy protagonist of many shotty shapeshifter romance.

Once again, I'm not saying these are how they SHOULD be done but trying to get a spectrum of different werewolf interpretations. Admittedly the designs of the werewolves aren't as well conceived as I'd like. For example, the first one should be redone in a different pose to prove the point I was trying to make in the text. But time ran out. Hopefully in the future I can redo them.
Excuse any bad grammar, or simply bad communication I will try to make everything more clear when I get the time.

Ehh... Yeah... Does look like it but it's still my favourite, it's like a native werewolf... Looks like it's on the good side too.

cool! In my opinion, the third and last ones are perfect werewolves because they look more like a wolf than man-wolf hybrid. The man-wolf hybrid is a no for me. But the anthromorphic wolf and quadruped wolf is the best!

This is a nice collection of the archetypes.

The humanoid wolfman, the twisted semi-wolf, the sapient anthro, the savage anthro, the total feral, and the deceivingly normal-looking.

What about a Part 2? I would like to know your personal favourite.
My Favourite is a Mix between 3 and 4, with a little bit of 2 and 5

The 3rd kind just...eh, it's not really werewolf-ish to me. It seems like a creation of the wolfaboos. 4 and 5 seem more like the kind I like to see, with perhaps #1 being a sort of prequel to the full massacre.

My personal opinions:

1. Alright, but I prefer werewolves to be a bit more wolf-like
2. No
3. This is more like it
4. Probably the perfect form for horror films
5. Same opinion as 4
6. Same opinion as 3

I like the middle two the best, but I prefer the middle right, since that kind seems to take many personalities, from vicious and bloodthirsty to calm and curious. Plus it's just badass to look at.

My favorite is the far left one. It's the best one, too. I watch Once Upon a Time and Red Riding hood is that kind. I don't like humanoid werewolves. Only the people who actually become wolves.

I'm a fan of the second one. It looks both inhuman and "in-wolf". It's completely monstrous like it should be.

FredtheDinosaurman [2015-02-08 19:10:08 +0000 UTC]

Very nice! I personally dont see the problem with #6. A man turns into a wolf...so what? It's still pretty cool. Everyone who keeps griping about it needs to let it go, there's no termination of that form. It's my favorite.
Nice work!

One thing I think that we can all agree on is that the "werewolf" depiction at the far right is just stupid, personally I think that the 4th one down the line from the left is the best depiction. That one is what most people think of when hearing the word "Werewolf".

BrianThomasX [2014-11-19 12:06:17 +0000 UTC]

I say the "humanoid" werewolves are creepier. It's the mix of the human and inhuman that makes it work. Quite frankly they make for better movie / TV werewolfs.  I think the reason werewolf movies (good ones) are so hard to find is that once you get past the transformation (the whole point in most movies) what you left with is either a remote controlled puppet or a CGI cartoon that looks like a big scruffy dog. They are not relatable to the mainstream audience. The Planet of The Apes movies work because you can still see the human face at work with the CGI.

Interesting piece! Say, have you ever compared the humanlike werewolf to the deep sea predators? Using familiar body features that seem to blind the truth; drawing in the creature using these familiar aspects and then striking.

Honestly none are correct or incorrect. They're all a version of the same creature that has been changed throughout the years.

If you meant that they are correct to what we believe to be the original myths, then yes i suppose your statement holds some merit. But we need to remember that since none are real none are correct or incorrect as well.
