Description I think back in 2004 everyone who had anime art for sale on ebay was commissioned to draw Maris the Supergal fan art by this one fan who absolutely adored her. A very obscure title by Rumiko Takahashi about a woman who was so strong she had to have a bikini that kept her strength in check. I had never seen it before, but some nice people sent me a link and so now I've seen the first episode Back when I drew this there was no Wikipedia or YouTube...

I drew her in a wrestling ring-- the largest ring ever built, apparently. Well, her face still looks cute, at least.

Yeah, I never saw the show when I drew this, so I had no idea that's what it was. I've seen the show now, but when I was commissioned I wasn't given much info.

It was all right. Interesting concept. I am a HUGE Rumiko Takahashi fan, but the version I saw was really low quality. I'm looking for it on DVD, but I don't think even here in Japan it was released on DVD.

Why are your scraps not appearing in my messages? POO.

Anywa, MARIS!! I loved that story, it was so...absurd xD Nice touch with her opponent lying on the floor.

You've actually heard of it? Haha XD

You have to manually select "scraps" I think. I am pretty sure most people watching me don't have scraps selected either, heh. (and except for on people with impressive technical skills, I don't watch peoples' scraps either)

Yeah, she appeared in the Rumic Theater books that VIZ published back in the 90s, along with Fire Tripper (it's sorta a proto-InuYasha) and Laughing Target (which creeped me out as a kid, eek)

But I had selected scraps; I've selected scraps for most people *should check in case*

How weird, then XD

Proto-Inuyasha??? I'll need to look that up.

I don't know about the US, but in the UK this got a PAL VHS release as Maris the Supergal, and it was released as part of the Rumik World series with Fire Tripper, Mermaid Forest and Laughing Target. The power 'suit' braces actually stop her from being overpowerful, when she's not got them on, she's too powerful for her own good and normally breaks everything around her. This is good when it's a bad guys face, bad when she puts her foot through her own spaceship xDD.

Anyhoo, this is a great fanart, I really like it ^^, for someone who hasn't seen it you've captured her really well!.

Anime's worth digging out if you can find it, but don't pay TOOO much for it lol, it's only about 30 mins long.

Oh cool, thanks for the info! I'll update the info on the image later, thanks

Yeah, I have been meaning to either watch it or read the manga. I went looking for the manga but couldn't find it.

I wonder if it ONLY got a UK English release? I had never heard of it until someone asked for a pic on an ebay commission.

Glad I got her character right! Thanks ;D

PoisonRemedy In reply to OgawaBurukku [2009-07-03 06:21:41 +0000 UTC]

No problem!

As to the UK Release, it's possible I guess, while Maris is dubbed with American actors on the VHS version, the other Rumik World title I have, Fire Tripper is actually dubbed with English actors, making it the only thing that's not a video game I've seen that's actually been dubbed in the UK xD. Shame it's not well dubbed xD. I know that most of what came out in the early 90s on 'Manga Video' VHS dubbed has been released by Manga Video's US sister company US Manga Corps, who've gone bust now sadly (just before I was able to blag subs of MD Geist xP) so it could be they released it on video in the states but it's long out of print.

Given how huge Takahashi is I'd be surprised if there isn't some kind of way of getting it on DVD in Japan (I noticed you're while I was poking around the rest of your gallery, which is rad by the way ^^) but it'd probably be a hard search. Also it might be a possible youtube mission, a TON of that late 80s early 90s out of print stuff has been uploaded there.

It's worth watching for giggles, but I wouldn't pull your hair out trying to get it. It plays out like a halfway house between Project AKO and the original Dirty Pair, it's silly and raunchy but not too OTT. I've got a quite big soft spot for the character mainly so I forgave it some of it's cheesiness xD. There's something highly amusing about watching a tiny little woman in a space age bikini kick the crap out of hordes of armored goons.

Btw mind if I watch your page? I like your art a lot ^_^

Oh yeah, that'd be absolutely okay ;D You seem pretty cool, so I'll have to check your art out, too

Haha, Takahashi has built a career out of drawing women in bikinis, hasn't she? Haha XD I should draw Lum and Maris together and see who would win at a bikini contest. ... no wait, I really SHOULD draw that!

Watching away ^^ thanks, I'm glad xD. Feel free to watch back to if you like my work!

Yeah, kind of, it's true! Believe it or not I haven't seen Urusei Yatsura yet, there seemed to be so much of it (and the UK vids in the 90s were so expensive I couldn't afford them as a kid xP). You should SO do that it would be hilarious!

OgawaBurukku In reply to PoisonRemedy [2009-07-04 02:10:06 +0000 UTC]

Watching ;D

I've read more of the manga for Urusei Yatsura than seen much of the anime. I don't like old TV anime where the quality in sound is really bad (I tried to watch original Dragon Ball episodes and just couldn't get past Bulma's shrieking), but I have been meaning to watch some of the UY movies or something. Lum is one of my favorite anime girls.

Thankies!

Hmmm *nods* It's funny, everyone in the UK and US is like 'YOU WATCHED THE DUB! BLASPHEMY!' but there's a few series I actually like better dubbed because I find the Japanese voice actors the wrong guys for the job. It can be just as bad with the dubs (just watch Gakusen dubbed and you'll see what I mean lol) but things like Bleach and Cyber City Oedo I just find the American actors far more in keeping with what I'd expect from the atmosphere. Also...the Japanese soundtracks for a lot of the 80s cyberpunk shows like Guyver and Cyber City sucked hard in comparison to the new soundtracks Manga Video put over them.

I thought the Ranma dubs, Evangelion dubs, and Rayearth dubs were really well done. I prefer to watch them in Japanese just because some jokes get lost in translation, but if you don't speak Japanese, I don't see why people get all upset if you prefer dubs over subs.

The one dub I prefer over the original Japanese track is the Goldenboy dub. That thing was SOOOO much funnier in English.

PoisonRemedy In reply to OgawaBurukku [2009-07-04 07:55:49 +0000 UTC]

Goldenboy? Not heard of it, might see if I can dig it out xD.

I don't know why people get all bent out of shape over it. I'm sure a Japanese guy given the option of watching say Transformers the Movie in Japanese dub or english sub would go for the dub option. I tend to watch anime however I can get it. If it's only available dubbed (like MD Geist or AKO for instance) I'm not going to intentionally not watch it till it gets subbed xD.

My boyfriend can't speak English, and before we moved in together he would always watch American movies on TV in the Japanese dub. I can understand it and all, but I'd much rather hear Tom Hanks say his lines in English than hear some dub or whatever. So now that I'm around I have him watch American movies in English with Japanese subs. When we watch a Chinese movie I prefer to have the Japanese dialogue on and when we watch a Korean movie I like to put it on Japanese subs (because I think Korean sounds kind of cool ). He's actually picked up some English (mostly naughty words) now that I make him have the original English for American movies.

PoisonRemedy In reply to OgawaBurukku [2009-07-04 11:31:49 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, sounds like you've found the best ways to create workarounds for most movies there

Korean does sound cool doesn't it .

I've picked up a few bits of Japanese...though they're primarily useless, I can say 'sorry' 'hi' 'stupid' and 'monster/demon' in Japanese xD. My dictionary might expand a bit if I stopped watching the Ju On films over and over xDD.

I'm pretty sure it was Maris the Chojo XD haha I think, at least. If you do a search for "Maris the Chojo" I'm sure some more information will come up. From what I understand the anime was kind of like Project A-ko
