Personality: The sort of stereotypical kind of "rich kid" who, even in the affluent neighbourhoods of New Arbor, is considered one of the snobbiest. He's tried to work on his attitude, but really he doesn't care to show respect for people that don't show him any amount of respect first. He can be described as "rude" or "brash" by many people, but that's only because "they don't know him" (or at least that's Lucien's excuse). He is, of course, able to exhibit a "soft side" to people he cares about. When he hangs around Lucien, for example, he's much happier and more lax than he is around others. If you would want to have a peaceful conversation with him, it would be best to do it when Lucien's around.
He's also an adventurous type. Ever since he's been granted permission to come and go from the Rau estate freely, he's shown considerable excitement for things that he actually doesn't know. He loves exploring the city and makes it his plan to try out a pastry at every single bakery that he can find. He also wants to explore outside the Barrier, but even Lucien advises against it.

Background:You might know how Mayoral elections are held in New Arbor. Well, they aren't "held" so much as "bequeathed." "Mayor" is merely a title bestowed to Rau family and all its heirs that would inherit the seat after the previous Mayor is defeated by the current heir in battle. This is a family tradition that, while often criticized, has proven to create Mayors worthy of running the city to the standard that is expected of them. It's said that this battle will be televised, as Laurel is up against his father, Johannsen M. Rau: a man nearly twice his size and with that much more control over magic to boot.

Laurel is on his way to becoming Mayor in just such a way. He was raised in the Rau family estate all his life, living a sheltered existence that consisted of mostly training, training, and more training. He's been trained ever since he could walk to be able to defeat his father in his coming-of-age battle. The only goal in his mind for a long time had been figuring out how to defeat his father. It's a little cruel to think of how the training involves an inherent resentment for a father you've rarely seen, but he'd never put that thought in his mind before.

It wasn't only until the past few years, when he began leaving the estate much more often, that he started to change. He was very good at his training, and had been able to meet several of the family's criteria years before he was meant to. He studied his hardest and accelerated his learning because, as he was beginning to expand his mind and wonder, he yearned for what the rest of the city looked like from outside the estate. He started sneaking out to try and learn more, accompanied by his (now former) servant and guard, Lucien.

At first, he was quite obviously socially stunted. Putting his studies to become the next Mayor over everything else in life had made him clearly not develop the kind of social skills you would need to interact with the everyday citizen. He used Lucien as his "mediator" most of the time, and more often than not, people wouldn't know who he was since he rarely left the estate previously.

It wasn't long until he started coming into his own, though. He was able to quickly pick up the social norms of the city and managed to start talking to the people in the city more often, still accompanied by Lucien and always making sure not to let anyone know he was the heir to the Rau family. Of course, being raised in the Rau family, he carried himself with dignity and a posture befitting of a high-status individual. It wasn't long before people started putting two and two together and began to realize that he was the by that was to become the new Mayor of the city one day. Despite his slightly harsh attitude, he's gained good rapport with the citizens and is much loved by most people - at least most of those he's been able to talk to so far.

One day, he was attacked when he was out with Lucien. To this day, Laurel doesn't remember who it was or what happened. Lucien managed to protect him, but not well enough. Laurel sustained a few injuries, but Lucien managed to get both of them to safety and deal with the threat before he could cause further harm to Laurel. When they got back to the estate, the head servants were furious at Lucien for allowing Laurel to get himself hurt like that. Laurel, having been with Lucien for so long, knew it couldn't have been solely Lucien's fault, but it was no surprise that they heard about it long before the two got home. Lucien was relieved from duties at the estate the second they got back. The other guards and servants kept Laurel in the estate under high watch, as Lucien was cast out and left to his own devices. Laurel felt guilty for not being able to defend Lucien well enough and take his share of the blame for the attack, citing that he was too oblivious or careless and caused himself to be put in the way of unnecessary danger. However, he could no nothing but accept it and try to move on.

Of course, he didn't actually move on. He felt it was wrong that Lucien was so quickly dismissed, and regularly snuck out to find him. After Lucien was kicked out, the life in the estate became exceedingly boring, and he found that life in the estate just was not worth living without Lucien around. He managed to find Lucien quickly, learning that he found work as a Spark not too shortly after he was dismissed, but his retainers found out and forbade him from leaving ever again. A lot of fighting ensued, but he finally was able to secure an agreement in which he could come and go from the estate whenever her pleases. The only condition imposed upon him was that he wore a cloak and that he carry his compendium with him so that he could defend himself, but these were negligible conditions that he would have done himself, so he saw it as a win. He immediately bought Lucien a phone so it wouldn't be so hard for them to meet up again and, upon hearing that Lucien was considering becoming an Operator, helped him become one with his own recommendation.

Now Laurel lives relatively carefree. He's currently finishing up his Mayoral studies and is going out with Lucien to interact with the city goers or go on dates and try to enjoy himself. However, the thought of finally having to fight his father for the seat of Mayor draws near.

He's started having second thoughts.
