For the motion i made all the colour and line art layers for Mikasa into one and duplicated it, and for one i added motion blur on the leg and a layer mask with a gradient on the leg, for the other i added a layer mask with a opposite gradient.

you mean,
Mikasa is duplicated. so 3 layers (including original one). then, the first duplicated one added motion blur on the leg then use the layer mask with gradient. another duplicated one is done the same thing except reversed / opposite gradient...

am i right?
(i never done with gradient for layer mask, i just use fill-up (bucket tool). but the selection was feather first.)

yeah, but the original one is many layers in a group, and i converted it to smart objects, copied it, undone it (so i still have the original), and pasted it (so i have a copy of the smart object on only one layer). 

So i have 2 duplicates (each on a separate layer) and the original one (on many layers in a group), but i hide the original group so you can't see it and just have the 2 layers, one with motion blur and gradient mask, and the other with just opposite gradient mask.
