Description Bodnant Garden Part 1Bodnant Garden Part 1 - House and Grounds
In a sheltered valley next to the River Conwy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Conwy  in North West Wales lies Bodnant Garden https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lists/spring-gardens-in-wales?dfaid=1 , the most famous country house garden in Wales and one of the most famous in the whole of the UK for its history, its unique features, and its range of plants, shrubs and trees. I was lucky enough to visit the Garden recently and to take a few photographs. The Garden, some 80 acres, has been run by the National Trust since 1949 https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lists/spring-gardens-in-wales?dfaid=1, but its history dates back to 1875 when a Georgian house first built in the late 1700s was bought and progressively rebuilt by one Henry Pochin a very successful Victorian industrialist. His daughter married Lord Aberconway and she and her descendants  developed the house and land until the garden was taken over by the National

Yes, quite correct, Linda. The architects planned it that way. I think I've said somewhere that the lady of the house had a seat built here so that she could look over to the formal gardens and the aspect of the house.

Many thanks.

I recall reading that...I thought the seat was at the mausoleum, though...But it was late when I looked at the photos.   I'm probably recalling wrong.

A nice country house for someone who could afford it.

It is the upkeep of such places that takes the cash, Bob. Constant repairs, heating bills... But, yep, quite nice to live in.

Cheers

I'd love to see a photo from this spot taken during the height of summer with full foliage.  What a view!

Many thanks, M. Although taken from some distance away, you can get a good feel for the structure if you zoom in.

Many Thanks

I do love the structure, that structure in itself is a job in itself to design

This late Victorian style varies so much from house to house as the owners wanted something unique. I'm not decrying it, it is a marvellous building, but to my eyes a bit odd. I'm very pleased you see so much in it.

Cheers

As a visitor to the photo and to the Gardens,
the Victorian style promises an old time charm
that many people did and still do love.

I collected Victorian for awhile until I went totally Rustic
but the Victorian age and British Power were at the height
then along with brand new ideas of liberalism and womens rights....

Victorian history is still very popular in the UK, M. Lots of TV shows etc.

Good point, Pia. The architects and the original owner, Henry Pochin, would have had that in mind when designing the building. They would have wanted to create something that looked extraordinary - magical. I think they suceeded, but it is a bit odd.

Many Thanks
