Some Birds of South Africa Part 1I recently had a vacation in KwaZulu Natal, one of the main provinces of the Republic of South Africa. The bird life in this region is an ornithologist's paradise and I was fortunate enough to be able to snap nearly 50 different species over my sojourn. The shots seen in this and subsequent parts of the journal are from three main areas: around Montusi Mountain Lodge in the northern Drakensbergs http://www.montusi.co.za/ ; around Moorcroft Manor at Himeville in the southern Drakensbergs https://www.moorcroft.co.za/; and around Rhino Ridge Lodge https://www.rhinoridge.co.za/ in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Game Reserve in central KwaZulu Natal https://hluhluwegamereserve.com/.
Almost all the photographs were taken using my Canon 5D Mark III camera fitted with a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM zoom lens augmented by a Canon Extender 1.4x III, giving a maximum focal length of 560mm. This focal length is getting towards the maximum that can be used as a hand-
