Description Happy Hiking
As with weather the world over, the elements around the Drakensbergs can be very changeable; hiking in the region can be a pleasure on balmy, calm days, or a challenge of endurance on a grizzly grim day.
Our first day's hiking around Montusi Mountain Lodge in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa was undertaken in the most beautiful of winter days: sunny, blue sky, warm, slight breeze, beautiful long views, and just enough of the ups and downs to make a late lunch-time beer a welcome reward. We walked around the Wanhoop Loop, about 3 hours stroll, a couple of views being shown below. The long views so much need for the weary town eyes we had developed are clear to see. The whole area is criss-crossed with paths, mountain bike tracks, and lazy little streams and rivers providing idyllic picnic spots, and even swimming pools in the summer season. All these images are worth using the zoom in facility if you can.

What a pretty view....They look a bit like stepping stones in the water. ^^

Yeah - just like stepping stones, Linda. This is where the geology of the region comes into play. What you see is sandstone rock, laid down countless millions of years ago. Then, unlike more geologically active regions, those sandstone beds just sat there and were  covered in more more different soils and rocks. In more recent times, geologically speaking, those upper layers got washed away tp expose the flat underlying sand stones. Slowly the little river carves out its path leaving some bots standing and other bits washed away.

Many thanks!

David

Despair walk?

I should have known you would know the meaning of "wanhoop", Max. I think the story is that the Voertrekkers had reached this area after years(?) of arduous wandering, and having descended the enormous escarpment that lies between here and the higher plateau looked across the grassland and saw no respite from their toil. Hence, despair. There may be a more specific reason, but I can't remember it.

Cheers
