Description More practice for my forthcoming trip to South Africa - hand-held close-up of a fly on what I think is a bloom of knapweed. 100mm L series macro Canon lens, extensive post-production noise reduction and pre and output sharpening with Nik software, plus additional selective noise reduction in Adobe Lightroom. Inspection of the EXIF data shows an ISO of 3200, so the original noise in this image was high; the Tv at 1/60th second was chancing it for hand-held work, but I wanted as much depth of field as possible hence f/22 aperture. Overall - I was wingin' it for a hand-held close-up (just about a macro) of the fly.

The image can bear zooming in on the fly, but it is obvious where post production noise starts to take over on the fly.

It comes back again and again to chance favouring the prepared, Linda. In wildlife work, you need to have the camera primed with all the correct settings, you need the correct lens, and you need the general idea of what you want to do. Then, 90% of the time nothing useful occurs. for the remaining 10 %, 8% you may get some shots but they are duds, and then you have the lucky 2% that happen to be OK. That is how it works.

Many Thanks

David
