Description
This week there is no "rendered image of the week". Three years ago I created a map of the political division of the Milky Way in my Stargate Battlestar Galactica AU. This one wasn't very pretty, but it was the best I could create so far. This week I discovered a video that described a method to create a map that visually matched the features I wanted. So I recreated the map using that method.
Here you can see the new version of my map of the territories of the Free Jaffa Nation, the Intergalactic Union of Sovereign Planets, the Covenant of the Liberated Celestis, the Lucian Alliance and the Motahed Hokumat Majabooto. In the new version I have tried to show the fragmentation of these five powers more strongly than in the old map. In doing so, I have created two versions. In this version here, in my opinion, the fragmentation, but also the merging, the blending of the state territories, is best represented. However, since the representation of the territories has to be partially transparent, the map is somewhat confusing.
Therefore, I have created a second map (here the link Territories of the Important States of Avalon II ) on which the territories are not transparent. This makes the national territories appear more delineated than I would like, but the territories are easier to recognise. Also on this second map, as on the original map, I have marked the positions of various important worlds, partly from the SG series and partly from my head canon.
Since the positions of the territories have changed compared to the original map, I also had to change the positions of the worlds a little.
Explanation of the distribution of state territories: In my opinion, the biggest problem in creating a map for the Stargate universe is that the territories of the individual factions are very fragmented by the Stargate network. All the major factions, especially the five major powers of Nation, Union, Alliance, Empire and Covenant, are spread throughout the Milky Way. The factions essentially consist almost entirely of countless enclaves. Territories that actually consist only of member worlds of a faction rarely have a diameter of more than a few hundred light years. Far too small to be correctly represented on a map of the Milky Way. The smallest structures on this map, the yellow and blue filaments in the south and the red filaments in the northeast of the map (this territorial representation is an accident, but looks good), are at least 250 light-years wide given the proportions of this map.
400 years after the events in the SG series, in the 4th century AJR/24th century AD, the main powers of my AU are distributed as follows. For simplicity, I use planetary cardinal directions in the description. North is above (where elseย ):
The core territory of the Free Jaffa Nation largely corresponds to the former main territories of the Goa'uld system lords, first and foremost the territories of Ra, Yu, Sokar and Cronos. The main focus lies in the regions north to east of the Galactic Core.
The main territories of the Intergalactic Union of Sovereign Planets in the Milky Way are distributed relatively evenly throughout the galaxy. However, the main focus is on the areas around the sectors of the most important planets: Chulak, Cimmeria, Hebridan, Tau'ri as well as the former Tollan territory.
The Free Jaffa Empire mainly controls the areas of the former Goa'uld territory that do not belong to the Free Jaffa Nation. The main focus is on the regions west, south and east of the Galactic Core.
The main territories of the Covenant of the Liberated Celestis are centred in the regions west of the Galactic Core, mostly located between Union and Jaffa Empire territories. As well as south-east of the Galactic Core.
The Lucian Alliance controls mostly areas north-east of the Galactic Core not controlled by Jaffa Nation or Empire. As well as a corridor west of the Galactic Core between the Union, the Jaffa Empire and the Covenant. The Covenant Area in this region, on the other hand, separates this Allianz Corridor into a southern and a northern part.
Like the Union, the Motahed Hokumat Majabooto is distributed relatively evenly across the Milky Way, with only a few individual solar systems north-west of the Galactic Core controlled by Hokumat.
The areas of the Galactic Core are not claimed by any of the major powers. There, these powers have only a few scientific or mining bases, if any. The conditions of the Galactic Core, such as a higher density of stars, make navigation and hyperspace flights difficult. In addition, there are few Class M worlds in the Galactic Core. Therefore, organic beings rarely stray here, as life is more difficult for organic beings here than in the rest of the galaxy.
In contrast, various cybernetic or anorganic cultures have settled in the Galactic Core. They can cope much better with the conditions here and thus avoid potential conflicts with the powers of the purely organic peoples.
The main powers in the core region are the Incy, the descendants of those Cylon Centurions who fought on the side of the rebel Cylons and their colonial allies against the Cylon loyalists and were rewarded with freedom at the end of the Cylon Civil War.
The other great power are the replicators. These are "descendants" of the remains/parts of the replicators that survived the use of the Dakara superweapon and were able to settle undetected in the galactic core. Until the end of the 2nd century AJR, these replicators could more or less hide from the organic races, their existence more a rumour than a confirmed fact. From 180 AJR onwards, however, there was a series of conflicts with the Incy over control of the Galactic Core and the existence of the surviving replicators was revealed at this time at the latest.
These two cybernetic/inorganic races keep out of the affairs of the organic powers. In return, their claim to the core territories is not challenged by any significant (largely organic) power in the Milky Way, so peaceful coexistence has been achieved.
