Description Another sit-with-library-book-and-copy sketch, I did this a few weeks back, after Danloux's exquisite portrait of Mademoiselle DuthΓ©. One of my favourite elements of the painting is the color (turquoise!!), and that's obviously not preserved here, but the draperies of her skirt and the cushion she's kneeling on were very interesting to draw.

Done in a new charcoal pencil that I got for cheap on clearance, it was a different experience, since it's so much softer than my usual pencils. I had to be extra careful to get any details, and the softness of the lead is also why the scan is somewhat grainy looking. I tried to fix it in GIMP, but it didn't really work too well. It looks much softer and better in person, I swear!

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the proportions and shading on this one, especially since I had to fight with my pencil so much.

^ Yeah, I was that impressed by it! Lol. I've recently obtained charcoal pencils myself for the first time, and have found that they are AWESOME. Hey, could I do a wallpaper with it (eventually)?

Thank you!

Do you mean using my image of my drawing?

No problem!

Yes, I'd use your version and give you the credit you deserve for it.

I'd really rather not. I don't like my work being "messed with" by others because I'm so picky about how my stuff looks. It's nothing personal, so I'm sure you'll understand.

Oh, it's absolutely fine. I can always use the original painting you based your drawing on. No harm done

Thanks for understanding. I wish you better luck in finding a hi-res version of that painting, though, than I had when I was making an icon out of it!

I've seen a big version in a book on fashion, but that's the only place. That's what I used when I drew it.

Hmmm, well first, I got it in a strangle hold, then I wrestled it to the ground. It didn't like that, however, so then I roundhouse kicked it a few times until it finally submitted and gave in to my demands. LOL!

Wow, you are amazing! This reminds me of a scene in The Buccaneers, where Nan is moving some paintings in her rather large house. That movie was depressing, but parts of it I liked.

Mmm... well, there are two scenes in particular that are most definitely not for young audiences, and then a few "implications" both shown and communicated. It just wasn't a classic, heart-go-giddy period film. The Forsyte Saga was like that, too. My best friend made me sit through all seven hours of it (broken up into two weeks, of course) and she felt it was such an accomplishment, she bought me a pin for it afterwards. I just prefer to see people fix their mistakes before their lives are ruined. I want the lesson to be learned and the happiness to be earned. That's all.

Hmmm. I'm okay with "adult situations" but nothing explicit. I have no interest in the Forsyte Saga - it sounds incredibly boring and too much like a soap opera for my tastes!! Kudos to you for enduring it, though.

BethieMW In reply to olde-fashioned [2009-01-23 02:30:34 +0000 UTC]

Well... it's just a very uncomfortable few scenes. I did not enjoy them.
That's what I called it! The period drama soap opera! And it was all about the same family and their spouses and children. I didn't even care to keep up with who was who's second cousin and therefore couldn't marry so and so's third daughter. :/

I know what you mean. The parts I've seen of Daniel Deronda made me nervous, too.

That's a good way to look at it! So does this make persons of large family of greater character than those with fewer siblings?

I finally bravened up enough to watch that one. I couldn't decide whether I liked it or not. Hm... I prefer squeal-worthy period dramas.

Not necessarily... although it has happened.

Merci, mon ami!

Ahhh...but it was not a stick, but a pencil! It makes a big difference, if for no other reason that it keeps my fingers clean! (until I drag my wrist in the drawing itself... )
