Description This is a sketch I did early this year after Gerard's lovely portrait of Madame Recamier. Even the lady herself preferred Gerard's lively, vivacious rendition to David's harsh, starkly-lit example. I love the chair, and the drapery of her clothing is absolutely fascinating to me, so I just had to draw it!

Done in pencil, I used a print of the painting from a library book as a reference. I know she's not perfect (I ran out of room to draw her foot, for one thing!!) but I am pretty satisfied with her.

This one is good enough to NOT be considered a sketch but a full GREAT drawing, AWESOME WORK! instant fave, the detail is outstanding, its all just so good, and the shading! Not to mention the clothes, how long do these take you?

Wow, thank you very much! And I've never actually timed myself, but I can usually put out a drawing like this in a few evenings, spending a couple hours each night.

Ooohhh, cool! It takes me about 1, 2, or more hours to do it, not usually many more. and it only takes me days if I'm procrastinating on it. XD yeah, I rush things. if your interested at all u could check out my artwork account ~stargate4ever23 though I've never drawn any pride and prejudice or jane austen type things...

Sometimes I rush things, or do a quickie sketch more for fun than polish.

hahaha, I hate sketches(in my own work that is, me actually doing them) because I like my worked finished.

I like doing both, because sometimes I'm just not up for a finished drawing, or if I have a few minutes to kill I'd much rather have a full sketch than a fragmentary drawing.

WOW That's awesome! I loved it, it's very beautiful, indeed! Really, I already knew it when I saw the other drawing, but now I'm certain that you definitely have an enormous talent to draw as you have to do wallpapers. The dress is just wonderful, the folds and details on it are really incridble, I'm impressed! The hair is very beautiful too, and her face is really sweet, I liked very much her eyes as well. And, about the chair, I have no words to describe it, fantastic! The shadows, especially on her skin, are awesome too!

Beautiful!

Oh, wow. This is excellent. I hadn't even seen this yet when earlier I said that you have an aptitude for drawing fabrics and clothing. This particular piece definitely proves my point. Great job.

Thank you! I was oh-so-tempted to color it, but I refrained, because I always end up not liking as much as the black and white.

coloring does make things more complicated.

You did a good job shading the arms (I have the most difficulty with arms). Another lovely job with the folds on the dress too.
