Description For about half a year now I've been drooling over a Winsor & Newton series 7 brush.

Why a Series 7? Engineered for the Queen Mum back in the day, this brush is made from the pelt hairs of a winter Siberian male red sable (ain't making it up), it's more pliable than synthetics and it always springs back to a point. If you've used a synthetic you know the tip fibers feather out and get kinda curvy - the sable brush with its magical point is what enables the best control during painting or inking. I've seen it recommended over and over again.

Well, I finally splurged and got one.

As I suspected, the mere act of purchasing a fancy tool like that did not make me ink like Sean Murphy . Damn. LOL Aaah, it's true cozins, there are no shortcuts. The tools are only as good as the hands that wield them. ^_~

What IS true is the level of quality of the Series 7. My oh my, cozins, I have never met a more obedient brush. I just loved using it! True to the promise, it always sprang to a point, and that point was literally a hairline thin. I could've painted individual hairs if I was so inclined. The point was almost too fine for me, I didn't know what to do with it!

This Silk Spectre was my experimentation piece. I got a little carried away with the hair... but I got to draw spandex for the first time, wheee! Wish I could've laid in some shadows on her face, but I'm still terrified to "ink" faces. XD

*Wow*! This is stunning and eye-popping. I just leaned and stared and stared and *stared*. Seriously, from a distance, it's hard to tell that it's not a photograph. I... okay, I don't know art. I can't tell if that's a compliment or not. I just -- those boots! That hair! *fangirls*

I'm always afraid of drawing shadows on faces too. I think you could pull of just a line for the cheekbones. I love this image, great design. Very sleek.

Very nice work. I very much like the rendering of the hair.

I agree, W&N Series 7 brushes are the bomb. I use them for detailing and blending on miniatures. Dick Blick Art Materials has them for a good price.

Oh, tabarn__k, typical swear word, like F--K, but in Quebec own French...can be used, like F__k, as exclamative point!!!

I love two-tone sort of pictures like this. They're so simple and look so effortless and deft, yet hold an amazing amount of detail and quality to them. Nomnomnom looks delicious.

I love her smile! She's way too cute.

dfridolfs [2009-03-15 18:53:49 +0000 UTC]

This turned out spectacular. Whether intentional or not, it's kinda cool that she's sitting on the yellow shaped almost like the smiley pin. Stickin it to the Comedian (we can all be so lucky)!

Great art. Faved!!

OlgaUlanova In reply to dfridolfs [2009-03-16 05:22:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that was totally intentional. A cushy smiley pin. I actually wanted the yellow of her suit to somewhat blend with the bg, that'd be an interesting effect, but it turned out pretty compartmentalized. ^_^

Thank you very much, Derek!

You've been ripped off: Kolinsky brushes are not made from Sable's fur, but Siberian Weasel fur

nevertheless, it does sound like an amazing brush, and I love the resulting detail of her hair in this picture
