First of all, I'd argue that 'prettier' is very much subjective in this context. I personally find the complex golden-brown patterns of female blackbirds more appealing to the eye than the simpler black of their male counterparts, for instance.
As for why males are usually more colorful and flashy, there are several reasons. Females choose their mates. That means they will want to choose the 'best one', i.e. one that is healthy and can take of himself (and, by extension, of his mate and offspring). Looking healthy - and colorful - requires being healthy - avoiding dangerous, or even crippling injuries, being well-nourished, etc.
There's also another aspect to consider. The more impressive a male looks, the more intimidating he'll appear towards his rivals.
Females, on the other hand, don't need to look desirable - because they inherently are for the males.
