Could you retitle this as courtesan or oiran? It would be a considerate gesture, and very appreciated by a lot of people including myself because it'd prevent further of the misconception spread.

The picture is lovely, but that is not a geisha. They don't wear that many ornaments, and I'm pretty sure they don't have tattoos. Plus they wouldn't reveal that much skin publically, ever because they're not prostitutes like this lady (nothing against prostitutes though). It's a common misconception that geisha are prostitutes or courtesans, they're in fact artist and would probably be fairly offended by this depiction.

That looks AMAZZZING!! Just say the pots are imported from China. They look nice.

This is not a geisha, this an oiran, which is a prostitute. I won't talk about her almost falling kimono but the hair ornaments are more than signature ornaments for oiran. Good graphic thou.

Using the term Geisha loosely here... have you heard of the Yakuza ... ? I was just referring to the tattoos.ย

The Yakuza have dragon tattoos, not the ones she has. And this is an Oiran. Not a Geisha.

That's not a geisha, as others have pointed out, but an Oiran (I can tell by looking at the hairstyle). Oiran were the highest class of prostitutes within the legalized pleasure quarter Yoshiwara.
It's not bad though, and I guess you have no actual interest in Geisha beyond "making a pretty picture" so why would you care what you're actually drawing as long as it looks pretty?

Oliver the work is just great... just a point about the word Geisha. Geisha didn't wear those types of hair ornaments. Those are the ornaments of a prostitute in the Edo period, which are called Oiran or Tayuu. Geisha were very rarely tattooed, but Oiran and Tayuu were. Also Geisha never took their clothes off for anyone except their Danna. So I would say you did a great job of portraying a high class Oiran.

Can't speak to the technical details, but the composition is extrordinary. The overall piece has an air of stately elegance that epitomizes the very concept of geisha. I love it !!!

Ace! I really like this, the detail on the headpiece, the lighting on the face, and the facial expression/ make-up...she looks distant but (this could just be me) kind of sad... anyway, it all creates a great piece...

if there was one thing I'd criticise it would be the foot, it could just be me (again, lol) but something doesn't look right there...

meliescribbles [2006-12-08 22:27:12 +0000 UTC]

lol if we really wanted to get into details, we could also say her hair is decorated like a prostitue, geishas only had but a few hornaments but this piece is magical, the accuaracie of a vase or of costum takes nothing from it, exotic and unconventional, I love the tattoos, it really brings something different to the piece, very, VERY nicely done, +fav from me

Shavera [2006-11-18 18:22:43 +0000 UTC]

This is a very beautiful piece. But I think you could do some more research on what a Geisha, a kimono, and what the hair do's and hair ornaments really look like. ^^ Her hair do is more styled like the lover's knot style that Tayuu wear, but the hair ornaments really don't look right, save for the combs. And her kimono kind of looks like one of those cheap chinese bath robes. :/

The piece is beautiful, don't get me wrong, I love the lighting and the airness to it, and the depth and detail is great, but research on your subjects is always appreciated. ;3

Absolutely beautiful. I don't think the Chinese vases take away from the picture at all. Though being Japanese, it does create some doubts about historical accuracy. ^_~ But who am I to judge? You're very talented.
