Here's the first of the shorts I planned to submit before the second episode of Cop Story. If there's anything I can tell you about these shorts it's that they introduce a bunch of characters who haven't appeared in Cop Story yet and that the humour of these shorts might be either the best or the worst thing I have ever written.

Well, anyway. Meet Quinton "Quad" Rhoades.

Oh indeed...patronizing people are never pleasant to be around. Sometimes you just really want to smack them, or, in this case, play a nasty trick on them!

I enjoy how you use the sidestories to introduce characters who haven't appeared in the main story yet! I do that in my stuff too. I also use the sidestories to talk about people who were barely mentioned in the main story.

Yeaaah, unfortunately people like that are often attracted to jobs where they can push everyone around (both metaphorically and literally)...

And yeah, that kind of thing! In the long run I want to make Cop Story more like patchwork, stories of multiple people connected in multiple ways, I'm just not smart enough to figure out a way to do it within one comic. I itch to introduce Quinton to the main plot because while I have some shorts about him waiting to be drawn a lot of his arcs would work better within the long comic. I do some re-writing from time to time, realising I can let of things I got used to if they don't work, but I still think I'll get to the school arcs sooner than to Quinton's arcs.

That's pretty horrifying.

Ah, I see. Also, doing this kind of thing makes people more interested in what's to come, since they get sneak peeks of other characters and themes!

Yeah... Well, things are still better compared to 50 years ago, that's something. I guess there will always be some really good people and some really bad people (and everyone inbetween) in any profession, I just feel more angry about this when it comes to professions involving vulnerable people.

And yup, that's my evil plan! I notice people remember characters easier when they can connect them to events and actions! This was the reason I started drawing side comics, I just couldn't resist drawing all those characters and telling bits of their stories.

Indeed.

LOL, your "evil plan" xD It's a lot of work, though. I keep on realizing that my cast of minor characters keep on expanding...xD

I know, I used to be worried about it too, sometimes I still worry! But I tell myself that life is short, and I'm working on this story because it generally makes me happier and is fun and I don't expect to do anything commercial with it so I can pretty much do what feels right. Characters just happen in my head and I let them stay! I think we limit ourselves too much even when no one else is doing it, it took me way too long to realise it.

Yeah, I know that feeling. I actually thought about Basmachi when I was 15, when I was volunteering at a summer camp and bored as hell. I read the featured article on Wikipedia and that day, it was about the Basmachi revolution, so I was like, hey, this is really interesting! At first I just liked the topic because I felt like drawing some costumes and army stuff, but then, I just got sucked in and decided to make my own characters and stuff. Back then, everything was different: there wasn't really a plot and it was just a series of pictures of the characters (90% of them were of Chinghiz. Most characters you know today, like Sam, Yuriy, etc. didn't exist. The original cast was basically Chinghiz, Nurana, and Mitya). I posted a couple of pictures of Chinghiz in 2008-2009 and some people started talking to me about the story and I added more stuff to it, but it still never got anywhere.

It wasn't until last year that I actively started to work on the series again. I had just graduated from my undergrad institute and I was like, finally, I have a summer (mostly) to myself instead of having to take summer courses/work/volunteer--so why not work on that Basmachi thing you've pushed to the back of your mind for years? After all, life is short and after I go to law school, I thought, I wouldn't have much time for writing/drawing (so I thought. This turns out to NOT be true. Law school is not as stressful as I thought it would be) xD So last summer, I worked intensively on the series and yeah...that's what happened. I finished the main story last summer and started to add more things to the cast/background in the fall/winter of 2014 and up until now. Thanks to all the awesome comments and stuff from my friends, I've really become attached to the series and characters Never knew it would happen, honestly. Before last year, I rarely thought about my own characters...maybe 4 times a year at most LOL.

This sounds great! I'm glad you decided to do this and that law school ended up not that stressful because I hope you keep drawing and writing!! And doesn't it seem like life (or something anyway) just nudges stories your way, I mean what were the chances of you reading that article that day? I feel like that sometimes, like Cop Story was hanging around waiting for me to notice it all.

I always had SOME stories in my head but I could never stick to anything for too long. And for a while I had an idea of doing it professionally so I read a lot of scriptwriting and comics and animation, went to workshops, etc (I work as an illustrator now but honestly I don't know what exactly I want to do for a living - I love drawing but it turns out I don't really like drawing for money). And so the idea of publishing my comics made me look for compromise between what seemed popular or at least acceptable and what I wanted to do - "oh I'll have a couple of characters who are weird outcasts but this should be an action-packed sci-fi story with shiny stuff! it shall be fun, right, right?" Then I had a couple of really bad years and I guess it changed my perspective on many things. I still went back and forth after that, at one point I chickened out and tried to make Cop Story more like a gritty cop show but feeling guilty about it felt worse than feeling awkward when people ask "why do you have so many disabled characters?" - like I have to have some secret excuse of an answer for that! I think in the long run I'm glad it went the way it went - I love writing about both the cops, and Quinton and company, and the kids, I'd probably miss out on at least some of it if I wasn't going in circles before that. Not that I never go in circles now - I still get confused or discouraged but at least I don't feel like quitting entirely anymore!

Indeed. Yeah, it was actually during law school that I learned to draw so fast. Before *even when making the Basmachi pictures during the summer of 2014*, I usually drew 1 picture per week (and that was the fastest I had ever drawn up to that time). Now, even when having school/work, I can whip up at least 1 picture every two days if I'm not too tired (staying up late again, or maybe waking up extra early to do the pictures. I've learned to draw/sketch a lot faster).

Oh, I see. Wow, you work as an illustrator? Interesting! It's good that you don't feel like quitting entirely anymore! Same here, I don't feel like drawing for money. I'm not even fond of doing commissions (haven't done any on this site).

I think I got slower compared to how I drew in the uni but it depends on the picture (comics tend to take a bit more than a week but that's mostly because it's hard to work on a page without doodling something else from time to time, big pictures take a couple of days, and I can fit multiple doodles in a day). And I try to draw a bit every day, it's a good habit. I think drawing more is one of the reasons you got faster!

And yup! Nothing epic, doing mildly educational mildly entertaining pictures for a small magazine for kids. It's not too bad on most days but also doesn't feel like drawing, if it makes sense.

I see! Yeah, probably. Because previously, drawing was really a pain...never really liked the process of drawing. But I've always liked colouring.

I see! That sounds nice! Hm, is it like how I don't feel like I'm actually drawing when I'm doing something for the student newspaper?

I still enjoy sketching and colouring more then inking but you're right - if it's not enjoyable entirely something is wrong!

Yeah, that sort of thing, I suppose... Like I think more about what kind of drawing I need to do so the editor doesn't ask me for any changes rather than thinking of truly expressing the idea and being creative and imaginative? And often ideas of people who give me tasks are different from what I find right (even just visually, let alone the narrative) but my opinion isn't worth a damn even though I'm the one trained to do the job and doing it. And of course the whole "oh but it's drawing, you love drawing so you must love your job, it's so creative" speech...

Yeah, I know what you mean...sometimes being told to do something just makes you hate drawing even more.
