From about 10 years old until I left home (at 20), during the summer, I would wake up around 4:30-5am, wake up my mom and we would go canoeing in the marsh for a couple of hours, probably once a week (I would go on my own on the other days, weather permitting). My mother has dementia now, but she still remembers those times with fondness.
