Description
The seasons had changed once more.
The ground was coated in a layer of snow, and the morning sun cast a pink light on the frozen surfaces. The trees were stripped to their bare twigs, and the nights had grown cold.
He couldn’t help but remember that just around this time, he had finally gone to her.
Nahele drew his dark green cloak tighter around his shoulders as a chilling wind whipped through the forest. It didn’t nearly cover him enough, but he hadn’t been able to sew a new one yet. The paths through town were thankfully clear of snow, but he knew this wouldn’t be the case once he stepped into the outskirts. He checked through his bag once more, assuring he had everything he’d need. Flashlight, matches, food, a blanket… It looked like everything was there. Nahele took a deep breath and stepped off of the steps to the Spring House.
Into the outskirts.
It felt like the forest was colder, though that may have been because of the snow he was trudging through. He was grateful Hiroko made him wear boots; otherwise, his feet would be completely frozen. Nahele scanned the dead plants, looking for the one he needed. Did it even grow at this time of year? He hoped so…
As the earth draken trudged further into the forest, he found his mind wandering, wandering to all that was happening, what had happened.
So much had changed over the year… And so much more would change.
Hiroko was already in the process of becoming an adult. And, they wanted to progress in their lives. Hiroko seemed ready, if not a bit nervous.
But was he ready?
There was the bush, and it still had had berries on it. Nahele picked a handful and placed them in a bottle he’d brought in his bag. Time to head home.
Was he ready?
Yeah, he felt ready. He felt… stable.
Hiroko had brought that stability to him. He was working on keeping stable, keeping his temper down, working on being a better finley.
Maybe that’s part of the reason he wanted to grow.
Perhaps he was doing it to prove that he could do it, to prove that he could handle the change.
To prove he was no longer the destructive child he once was.
To prove he’d be better. To prove he could be better for her.
He felt ready.
