I think I did something similar in Kyoto. And as ThePatriarch said, people did look at my friend and I while they walked by. They were enjoying the red leaves above, while we took shots of the leaves on the ground and the leaves flowing in a rivulet ^-^

Did you set it on the ground or just hold it really low. Was anyone around? Because I find it's hilarious how insane people percieve you as when you do shots like this. When I was shoot something like this, it always seems to be the case that an enthralled crowd gathers to see the crazy photographer being weird.
