The match had been won but it had not been easy. They never are in tournaments. It’s often about determination and will, mixed in with a bit of luck.

Jessi Bowen could say this is almost certainly how that back-and-forth match had gone. She had an advantage, it was wrestled from her by Lunachick, then her determination had gotten her a bit of luck with a missed move.

Most importantly she’d won and moved on in the tournament. It didn’t matter how. On to the next match.

She glanced back at Lunachick, on the mat in clear discomfort from the finishing move and breathed a sigh of relief.

Lunachick had been superior for a lot of the match with her athleticism and skillset. She’d nearly moved on in the tournament, but she’d been a fraction of a second off and it cost her. She’d learn and move on, confident that next time that fraction of a second would be on her side rather than against her.

Allison sidled up next to Jessi and raised her arm.

“The winner by submission and moving on to the quarterfinals… The Mistress of Distress… Jessi Bowen! Congratulations on advancing.”

“Thanks” Jessi said. Moving on had been the goal and she’d done it. Now to reset and set her mind on the next goal.   Semifinals.
