This is a very clever visual pun. I like the overall atmosphere with the subdued colour palette & the blues & grays of the background being reflected in the figure. You've resisted placing the figure centrally which works compositionally, with the curve of the fish head being mirrored by the double curves of the sea & the tideline. There is a nice interplay of textures in all the elements as well.
The choice of components illustrate the evolutionary implication of the title, & I like the way the fish appears to be looking into the distant future, whether you intended this or not. One of my criticisms may be a function of my monitor - the skin of the shoulder & thigh are very orange, which draws the eye & detracts somewhat (but it could also be an artifact of uploading. I recently uploaded a piece where some very pale pink flesh tones became luridly red on dA). However, the ammonite making up the tail doesn't sit comfortably with the rest of the figure. I can see why you chose it, but it looks a bit stuck on - better blending with the flesh might have fixed this. Also the transition from the shoulder to the fish is a bit abrupt.
Overall, it's a wonderful piece & one you can be really proud of, as it works on more than one level. Plus it has a gentle humour, almost as thought it doesn't take itself too seriously!
