‘So how old are you Claire?’ They had been walking through the busy city for about an hour and hadn’t really spoke, Demin was looking at everything around him to see if recognised anything that might help him find out who he was. He recognised nothing.
‘I’m fourteen, do you have any idea how old you are?’ Demin stopped walking, the thought hadn’t even crossed his mind. How old was he? He didn’t feel very old, he seemed reasonably youthful. Claire noticed that he had stopped walking and came to join his side.
‘How old do I look?’ Claire looked carefully at Demin, she walked around him slowly whilst scanning him up and down. ‘Well if your going to take this long it doesn’t matter.’ Demin continued walking down the street soon being followed by Claire with Cream in hand. The streets had become fairly empty, which was strange for such a big city.
‘Twenty one.’ Demin turned to see that Claire had now stopped walking.
‘What did you say.’ Claire caught up to Demin and continued walking next to him.
‘I think you look twenty one.’ She then patted him on the back softly and increased her pace to overtake him.
‘That’s pretty specific isn’t it?’ Demin ran his hands through his hair and let out a deep sigh. ‘well if you say so, until I remember my real age I will be twenty one.’ He increased his step to catch up with Claire. He didn’t even know where they were going.
‘we’re here, come on Demin.’ Claire took hold of his hand and led him into a big old looking building, as they walked into a large room Demin realised where he was. It was a soup kitchen, a place for homeless people to get food and warmth. The room was quite full, Demin noticed some people staring at him as he walked past. It made him feel nervous, he could feel his stomach tighten as if something bad was about to happen.
‘Hello Claire, I haven’t seen you in a while.’ Demin turned away from the staring people to the direction of the voice, it was a man, average height with snow white hair and a white collar. A priest.
‘Hello father, I’ve been busy trying to find somewhere to live.’ The priest placed his hand on Claire’s shoulder, he opened his mouth to talk when he suddenly noticed Demin standing behind her. He quickly removed his hand from Claire’s shoulder and took a clumsy step back keeping his gaze on Demin, the priests face turned a pale white and Claire could see his hands trembling. Demin looked straight back at the priest, what had he done? Did he know Demin?
‘W-who is your friend here?’ The priest didn’t divert his eyes from Demin to talk to Claire, it was like he was hypnotised.
‘This is Demin my new friend, and this is Cream.’ Claire raised Cream to show her to the even paler priest, he didn’t take his eyes from Demin. Beads of sweat had begun to appear on the priests forehead, Demin reached his hand out to shake the mans hand. He didn’t react to the friendly gesture, as if he had just awoken the priest let in a sudden gasp of air and looked away from Claire and Demin.
‘Father Kenny, are you feeling alright? You’re shaking.’ Claire looked to Demin who had just placed his arm back to his side after his handshake was ignored.
‘Claire, I’m going to wait for you over by the far wall okay?’ said Demin as he headed to the other side of the room with a look of embarrassment on his face, the people that noticed father Kenny’s reaction to him all watched as he hurriedly walked to the wall. Why did the priest react to him like that? Demin couldn’t get the image of the frightened priest out of his mind. He just wanted to leave, he could feel his stomach tightening again. He started to feel slightly light headed, it must be the lack of food he thought to himself.

‘Father what’s wrong? Do you know Demin?’ the trembling priest stood straight and composed himself the best he could, he looked down to Claire. She could still see the fear in his eyes.
‘Where did you meet that man Claire?’ as he was talking he frequently looked back and forth from Claire to Demin.
‘In an alleyway yesterday, he has lost all of his memory and needs help.’ She looked over to Demin, there were people crowded around where he was standing earlier. More people were rushing over to the growing crowd of people, Claire worriedly began to make her way through the crowd when she felt a tight squeeze on her arm. Father Kenny pulled Claire back and tightened his grip on her arm.
‘Father your hurti-’ he covered his hand over her mouth and moved her further away from the crowd. Pressing her against a wall he moved his face close to hers, she could feel his breath on her.
‘Stay away from him Claire! I can see pure evil in him.’ His eyes had become bloodshot and his voice was deep and rough, he removed his hand from her mouth. The priest started to breath slowly, and calmly.
‘I don’t want to see you get hurt, he is evil.’ he loosened his grip of her arm, Claire took the opportunity to push Father Kenny back and make her escape.
‘STAY AWAY FROM HIM!’ his voice echoed though the large room attracting the attention of the crowd surrounding Demin, they all took a step back from him. Claire pushed and squeezed her way through the crowd, she could see Demin. He was kneeling on the tiled floor holding his head and shaking franticly, Claire pushed her way through the remaining crowd until she reached Demin. She knelt beside him and put her arm around him, his shaking became a cold shiver.
‘Are you okay? What happened?’ She could feel a sharp coldness emanating from his body.
‘Its my brain, there is something stabbing into my brain.’ Demin moved his hand away from his head and turned to Claire. ‘Who am I? What’s wrong with me?’ Claire looked into his eyes, she could see the pain in them, she also saw a faint green glow in them. It faded away. Demin suddenly stopped shaking and Claire could feel a gentle warmth rising from Demins body. ‘The pain has stopped.’ Using the wall to help him got to his feet, the crowd were still surrounding him. Watching him. Claire picked up Cream who had been hiding under a table, the room was silent.
‘Come on lets go, we’re not wanted here.’ said Claire as she led Demin towards the exit. As they were walking they could feel all the eyes in the room piercing them, she could see Father Kenny next to the doorway. He was on his knees, praying. As they walked past the Priest opened his eyes and looked into Claire’s, a single tear rolled down his cheek. Claire averted her eyes from him and looked ahead towards the exit.
‘I’m sorry for bringing you here Demin.’ She remembered what she saw in Demins eyes, was Father Kenny right? Was Demin evil? She quickly shrugged off the thought and they left the silent building.

As they walked past the Priest opened his eyes and looked into Claire’s, a single tear rolled down his cheek. Claire averted her eyes from him and looked ahead towards the exit.
‘I’m sorry for bringing you here Demin.’ She remembered what she saw in Demins eyes, was Father Kenny right? Was Demin evil? She quickly shrugged off the thought and they left the silent building.
