Creepers may be a pain in the ass with surprise, but they are dreadfully easy with foreknowledge. Just smack them a bit, and stay just within their boom-radius until they explode.
Took out a group of about fifteen in only three strikes once.
Granted seeing that many spawn at one scared the hell out of me.

I once had about ten of them spawn all around me, with lots of skellies and zombies and then provoked a a couple of enderman on accident while trying to aim at all of the other mobs.
