Kanagawa is a island in Japan, yes? Well, actually it's a prefecture if I remember correctly.

Yep, a prefecture or city, can't remember.

Yay! I remembered! Haha I took a Japanese culture class last semester and we had to memorize all the prefectures and where they were... I didn't so so well lol, so I'm surprised I remember.

The Japanese make it so complicated. DX

GOJIRA! Oh wait, no, it's gyarados I love these when I have one, but I HATE having to battle one. T.T They're so hard to fight.

I hate Gyarados. Takes so freakin long just evolve that damn fish, then I have to go another set of levels just to get Gyarados a decent freaking move to use (unless I teach it surf).

A fully trained one, though. Not bad at all.

operatingthetan In reply to Jieshii-kun [2009-05-15 19:35:04 +0000 UTC]

lol i know, he doesn't seem worth it at first, especially since the moves he learns on his own are pretty lame (dragon rage is nice since it always hits for 40 dmg, but other than that...eh) the fact he can learn all the best tms is a plus though. i hate how weak he is to electricity, why is he even half flying type?? i never understood that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jieshii-kun In reply to operatingthetan [2009-05-15 21:09:17 +0000 UTC]

Because of the wings, I guess. I think the best move list for a Gyarados is...

Aqua Tail, Bite, Ice Fang, and Stone Edge (learned through TM). Though it may be best to switch Bite out w/ Surf to take it through Victory Road if you want to use it against the Elite Four.

With that move list, it gives Gyarados a huge variety. They all capitalize on the fact that Gyarados has a higher physical attack stat than special attack.
Aqua Tail, 1.5 for same-type attack.
Bite - dark type move to use against physic and ghost types.
Ice Fang - beneficial against possible grass-type opponents.
Stone Edge - A rock-type move that gives Gyarados a chance against electric-types.

wings?! 0_o you mean his fins? i guess... i still think that's a cop out XD it's like they just went w/ some random way to make gyarados more balanced.

that's a great movelist though, far more thought out than anything i ever gave him. i just taught him fireblast, thunder, blizzard, and earthquake..i think (can he even learn that?? hmm) anyways my strategy was just to overpower and exploit elemental weaknesses. a very juvenile tactic lol.

Jieshii-kun In reply to operatingthetan [2009-05-16 07:48:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, fins, wtf ever. XD Hey, I've been having a fever all week.

Though whichever strategy works best for a person, lol. I like to play up to the stats and such (with some exceptions). With stuff like protein, carbos, and other things, you can raise up the stats.

And yes, Gyarados can learn Earthquake through TM.
Out of those moves, I'd leave out Thunder since Gyarados would have little need to protect itself against pokemon vulnerable to electric-types. I'd use that spot for Surf. That way I could keep it in my party while going through Victory Road.

lol it's okay, i suppose they would like like wings thru fever warped eyes. but your strategy is far superior to mine that's for sure.

Jieshii-kun In reply to operatingthetan [2009-05-17 11:51:38 +0000 UTC]

I actually used to just play by the old rule, overpower the hell outta 'em. It wasn't until rather recently that I've started out some strategies.

Me: Go Aggron!

Friend: Ha, rock type! Go Lapras!

Aggron used Thunderbolt! It's super effective!

Friend: WTF!?

Me: Strategy, dude, strategy.

I actually watched a video of a guy's walkthrough. He through PKMN Platinum and only used two pkmn to battle with through the whole game. He started with Turtwig and caught a Starly. That's ALL he used. He did catch some others, but only to act as HM slaves.

He also caught an Azelf. After that, all he used was Torterra, Staravia, and Azelf through the whole game. Didn't lose one battle and didn't have to do a whole lot of level grinding. I was like "O.O" through the whole thing.

Oh trust me, I enjoy life quite a bit, lol. Pokemon's just one of my favorite RPGs and I tend to get this way with anything I'm into. I'm the same way with wrestling, martial arts, Metal Gear, fighting games, various anime, and many other things.

oh, no i wasn't talking about you, i was talking about the guy who made the video sorry 'bout that. don't get me wrong i love pokemon too and play a crap ton of video games i'm just not the type who gets into playing those uber challenging game runs, like the lv. 1 no exp challenge or whatever lol. fun to watch tho i wasn't trying to be insulting or anything.

Jieshii-kun In reply to operatingthetan [2009-05-19 22:38:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, it's cool. Lol. Well the guy who made the video runs, like, one of the biggest pokemon websites and actually takes part in refereeing pokemon-based tournaments (didn't know they still had those). So he knows a crapload of things about the franchise (even owning Japanese versions). I guess he just made the walkthrough to help people get through Platinum or something.

I think the coolest part of this picture is Gyarados' fins. I like the way you made them tattered and translucent. And the water looks great. Like an old Japanese drawing. Mmm... Or as stated, like In the Hollow of a Wave off the Coast at Kanagawa. At any rate, you've made a fine piece of art. I can imagine it as a book illustration somehow. ^_^

thanks! i'm glad u like it. that woodcut is one of my favorite pieces of art EVER, putting a big bad gyarados in the center of it just seemed like a good idea lol. and yeah maybe they can put it in a pokemon themed book to teach kids about traditional japanese art ^^

It refers to the painting "Great Wave off of Hanagawa" (I think that's the right title) but I don't recall the artist who did it, but I know the painting. Nice work!

operatingthetan In reply to NinjaMaster13 [2007-08-14 13:34:03 +0000 UTC]

Wow that's right! (almost) it's Kanagawa, and the artist was Katsushika Hokusai. I think you're only the second person to know that, so right on for you! and thanks a lot!

No problem, I have a big art book with a bunch of Japanese Paintings from that era and that painting happens to be one of them. Couldn't exactly remember the name or the artist, but I am familiar with the painting.
