Coloured version of this ! This took a longer time than the other one to colour. I totally blame England's punk hair.

New Holland (Nova Hollandia) was the name given to Australia by the Dutch, who beat the British in discovering the Land Down Under by 144 years. Except neither the Dutch nor the French bothered colonising this piece of sunburnt land. So when the British colonised/invaded Australia back in 1788, it was still known as such, and would be until 1824.

Australia is then actually pretty young compared to the "New World" UK colonies; the USA (then only a collection of thirteen states) declared its independence from the UK in 1776 (and won it in 1781), but Canada didn't follow suit until 1867 (and even then it became the "Dominion of Canada"; full independence wasn't achieved until 1982). Australia gained full independence shortly afterwards in 1986.

So this translated into Hetalia-verse would be like England bringing back a baby Australia not long after America moved out of home after a huge fight with dad, while a young-teenage-ish Canada still lived with England. The reason for the use of so much red is because 1. English troops are known for their scarlet uniforms, and 2. American troops wore blue, and I'm assuming England's still angsting over America leaving him, so he'd refuse to have Canada wear blue (I did stick him in blue initially, but then remembered this).

And seriously, people back then had their ENTIRE outfits coordinated, down to the buttons. I'm not kidding.

I've got more head-canon regarding Australia's design, but this is tl;dr enough without that already. So they'll stay in my head. Except this one: I don't think Oz's buddy's just a koala; instead I reckon it's a drop bear .
