Wow! High praise! Thank you very much...

...the funny thing is, while making this, the thought occurred to me I could just draw the damn thing...but no way I'd be able to replicate the textures in the paper etc...so...collage it was.

again, thank you.

thank you very much. I've always sort of scoffed at stores like Micheals craft stores. Guess where most of the paper for this collage came from

WOW! Such a beautiful technique and theme. It's amazing what you've achieved here with all the subtle gradients. I never imagined this was collage!!!!
Amazing! bravo!

Thank you. I hate to confess...most of the work was already done for me (Jim Holtz idea-ology paper...comes in either 8X8 or 12X12" pads, on-line or if you're lucky, Micheals Crafts stores). I enhanced & shaded things & of course, cut things to shape & size...& well...created the composittion...but seriously, all that cool modulation in the greens- all I did was choose what part of the paper to use.

Still, what you chose and how the composition looks together is all credit for you!!!

I see "Roger Dean" in the waterfall. Whatever happened to him. Buying an iTunes album surely is a step down from having the art of an old Yes album.

Very serene work. It calms me. Though I have been on a beach of sea lions before.. and it was anything but

Just back from the beach (speaking of sea lions). Roger Dean is still around. His style has changed (much more painterly) but his signature impossible landscapes are alive & well. Yeah..."progress". iTunes...music but no album art...CD's, art, but in a tiny little format.

Dean's newest book "Dragon's Dream" is out & features a lot of his newer stuff. Pretty good & available at Amazon (shaking my head, thinking of the demise of small bookstores, & now even the chains are folding).

Adapt or die I guess. Cough. s'cuse me. Cough cough...

Well, thankfully I've long past the stage of needing a double album to clean seeds...Couldn't imagine trying to do that with an iPod.

you should make a video showing how you create something as gorgeous as this. I have no idea how you do it. So all the main items are cut and pasted? It looks seamless.

lots of parts...my secret (such as it is), color the edges of the work being glued down, matching either the background or the color of the surface, eliminating those pesky white edges...I also use a roller & my personal (pfffft, like only I do it)technique...lay wax paper down over the image & burnish the hell out of the edges. I use wax paper because if any glue seeps out (& it does), it peels cleanly off & you can see your edges. There is/was a tiny video @ youtube under ejp3art...went & looked...nah...gone. Then, in the end...spray varnish (I'm a philistine)- it's remarkable how many mistakes a little varnish makes disappear, that & it darkens the darks & amps up the color a little...

LizCohn In reply to opiumtraum [2011-08-22 19:19:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for sharing this. I think I want to try the varnish. Do you use a shiney or matte finish? Or do you think it matters?
Your work is looking so fine!

opiumtraum In reply to LizCohn [2011-08-23 03:25:52 +0000 UTC]

I go for satin finish...at the risk of going all Goldilocks- matte's too dull, glossy too shiny...not sure, but I think the varnish sort of acts as a binder- like a thiin layer of glue. I'm curious- what do you use for adhesive? I'm partial to YES! glue...though, thinned too much it doesn't hold at all. for thinner papers, Modge Podge. I've tried using gloss/matte mediums/varnishes, but they seem to buckle paper too much

acrylic gel medium. When I use too much, it buckles. A nice thin even layer.
